The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Alabaster runs its own collection crews. Household garbage goes out to city residents on the normal service day, while yard debris is collected weekly as biodegradable wood waste such as limbs, grass clippings and leaves, and anything bigger waits for the monthly junk and rubbish day, which is the first Monday of the month unless that Monday is a holiday and then it moves to the second Monday. The junk pickup is a reservation service rather than a standing route: a household signs up through the city's SignupGenius page, there are 100 slots each month, reservations open two weeks before the pickup day, the pile is capped at 10 cubic yards and every item is capped at 300 pounds, nothing longer than ten feet goes out, and the items may reach the curb no more than 24 hours before the pickup. The city adds two more pickups each year to match Free Day at the Shelby County Highway 70 Landfill, where county residents haul their own loads for a vehicle rate or a per ton rate on the free days each spring and fall. Tires are the exception everywhere: the city refuses them, the county landfill refuses them, and the state requires a permitted scrap tire transporter or processor.

Monthly junk and rubbish pickup

Accepted with preparation

Furniture, mattresses and white goods leave on the monthly junk and rubbish day, which is the first Monday of the month unless that Monday is a holiday, and the pile has to be reserved in advance.

City cost & eligibility
The city does not publish the amount for a junk and rubbish pickup and describes the signup as a calendar and payment site, while the ordinance sets a city fee for yard trash over ten cubic yards that is billed to the property owner, so call Public Works on 205-664-6810 or City Hall on 205-664-6800 and confirm the current terms before the pickup day.
When & how
Reserve a slot on the city's SignupGenius page, which opens two weeks before the pickup day and closes when the 100 slots fill, then put the items at the curb no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup. If the first Monday is a holiday the pickup moves to the second Monday and the signup opens a week later.
Get it ready
Keep the pile inside 10 cubic yards, keep each item at or under 300 pounds, keep every item shorter than ten feet, report an unusual item to Public Works before it goes out, and keep refrigerant, oil or gas appliances including gas powered lawnmowers out of the pile, along with dirt, rocks, stumps, tires, paint, propane tanks, batteries, medical waste and hazardous materials, because one of those items refuses the whole pile.
City household junk and rubbish page with the monthly pickup day, the reservation and slot rules, the ten cubic yard and three hundred pound limits and the ordnance refusals

Weekly yard debris

Accepted with preparation

Yard debris is biodegradable wood waste such as limbs, grass clippings and leaves, and it is collected weekly while a load over ten cubic yards carries a city fee.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no amount for the weekly yard debris service, and the ordinance provides that a fee in the amount established by the city is assessed to the property owner for yard trash in excess of ten cubic yards and billed by the city, so call Public Works on 205-664-6810 and confirm the current charge before a large set out.
When & how
Put the biodegradable wood waste out for the weekly yard debris collection, and keep it separate from the household garbage, which excludes natural yard debris.
Get it ready
Keep the pile to limbs, grass clippings, leaves and similar biodegradable wood waste, keep hazardous items and anything containing refrigerant or chemicals out of it because the city cannot retrieve those, and expect a city fee billed to the property owner when a yard trash load exceeds ten cubic yards.

Tires

Not on the regular city route

Tires are refused by the city and by the county landfill, so they go through the state scrap tire program's permitted processors and approved landfills instead.

City cost & eligibility
Neither the city nor the county landfill accepts tires and neither publishes a rate for them, while the state requires a permitted scrap tire transporter or processor, so call Public Works on 205-664-6810 for the current local route and use the Alabama scrap tire program's permitted processor and approved landfill lists.
When & how
Confirm the current route with Public Works on 205-664-6810 before moving the tires, and then use a facility from the state scrap tire program lists.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the junk pile and out of the garbage, because the ordinance refuses the entire pile when a tire is present, and keep them out of the county landfill load as well, because that landfill refuses tires, batteries, hazardous waste and liquids of any type.

Household garbage service

Accepted with preparation

The city provides household garbage service to city residents, and the page excludes natural yard debris and junk from the garbage container.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no collection rate on its garbage page, so call Public Works on 205-664-6810 and confirm the current charge and the service day for the address.
When & how
Household garbage is collected on the city route for the address, and the holiday schedule changes for Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day and Labor Day, with the revised schedule posted as each holiday approaches.
Get it ready
Keep household trash in the provided container, keep natural yard debris and junk out of it because the city will not knowingly dispose of those items even when they are inside a container, and report a service question through Report a Concern or on 205-664-6810.

The pile is limited to 10 cubic yards, every item is limited to 300 pounds, nothing longer than ten feet is collected, and the items may go to the curb no more than 24 hours before the pickup. An unusual item has to be reported to Public Works or City Hall before it is set out, and a resident without computer access can sign up at City Hall.

One refused item refuses the whole pile

No appliance containing refrigerant, oil or gas is picked up, and that includes lawnmowers and similar gas powered devices. Dirt, rocks, stumps, tires, paint, propane tanks, batteries, medical waste and hazardous materials are all refused as well, and the ordinance states that if any of those items are present the entire pile is not picked up. Commercially created trash and construction refuse, and homeowner construction refuse from major lot cleaning, home construction, major renovation, repair or demolition, are outside the service, and a licensed commercial hauler may be used for that work instead.

Yard trash over ten cubic yards is billed

Weekly yard debris covers biodegradable wood waste including limbs, grass clippings and leaves. A fee in the amount established by the city is assessed to the property owner for yard trash in excess of ten cubic yards, and the owner is billed for the charge by the city, so the amount is confirmed with Public Works before a large pile goes out.

Safety gear, free days and what the landfill refuses

The landfill refuses hazardous waste, tires, batteries and liquids of any type, and it closes on Sundays, New Year's Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

How does the Alabaster junk pickup work?

The junk and rubbish pickup runs on the first Monday of each month, or the second Monday when the first falls on a holiday, and a household has to reserve one of the 100 monthly slots on the city's SignupGenius page, which opens two weeks in advance. Old furniture, mattresses and similar items are covered, each item is limited to 300 pounds, the pile is limited to 10 cubic yards and nothing longer than ten feet goes out, and the items may reach the curb no more than 24 hours before the pickup. An unusual item has to be reported to Public Works or City Hall first.Official guidance

How is yard debris collected in Alabaster?

Yard debris is biodegradable wood waste including limbs, grass clippings and leaves, and the city collects it weekly. Household garbage excludes natural yard debris, so it does not go in the trash container. Hazardous items such as those containing refrigerant or chemicals are never collected with yard debris, and a yard trash load over ten cubic yards carries a fee in the amount established by the city that is billed to the property owner, so the current charge is confirmed on 205-664-6810.Official guidance

Where can Alabaster residents take tires?

Not to the curb and not to the county landfill. The city ordinance lists tires among the items that are never picked up, and a junk pile containing a tire is refused in full, while the Shelby County Highway 70 Landfill states that it does not accept tires, batteries, hazardous waste or liquids of any kind. Alabama requires anyone who transports or processes scrap tires to hold a state permit, and the scrap tire program publishes the permitted processors and the landfills approved to accept scrap tires, so the current local route is confirmed with Public Works on 205-664-6810.Official guidance

What belongs in an Alabaster garbage container?

Residential household trash, and not the natural yard debris or the junk that the city collects separately. The city states that it will not knowingly dispose of yard debris or junk even when those items are inside a provided container. Yard debris is collected weekly as biodegradable wood waste, junk and rubbish goes out on the monthly reserved pickup day, and garbage collection runs on the normal route day with a revised schedule around listed holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, Juneteenth and Independence Day.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Alabaster?

The City of Alabaster Public Works Department collects household garbage from city residents, yard debris weekly, and junk and rubbish on the monthly reserved pickup day, and it answers on 205-664-6810 with City Hall on 205-664-6800. The department notes that natural yard debris and junk are excluded from the garbage container even when they are inside one. The Shelby County Highway 70 Landfill serves county residents for self hauled loads and the state runs the scrap tire program for tires.Official guidance

What does Alabaster charge for collection and drop off?

The city publishes no amount for garbage service or for the monthly junk and rubbish pickup, and the signup runs through a calendar and payment site, so those charges are confirmed with Public Works on 205-664-6810 or City Hall on 205-664-6800. A yard trash load over ten cubic yards is billed to the property owner in an amount set by the city. A self hauled load at the Shelby County Highway 70 Landfill is charged by vehicle for a car, van or SUV and by the ton above that, with lower rates for county residents and two free days a year.Official guidance

What will not be collected in Alabaster?

No appliance containing refrigerant, oil or gas is picked up, including lawnmowers and similar gas powered devices, and dirt, rocks, stumps, tires, paint, propane tanks, batteries, medical waste and hazardous materials are all refused, with the ordinance stating that a pile containing any of them is not collected at all. Commercially created trash and construction refuse, and homeowner construction refuse from major lot cleaning, construction, renovation, repair or demolition, are excluded too and belong with a licensed commercial hauler. The county landfill also refuses hazardous waste, tires, batteries and liquids of any type.Official guidance
