Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Televisions and electronics are accepted in the annual Bulky and Reuse Pick-Up, and they also go free to the Alameda County household hazardous waste facilities or to a CVSan Recycles Day event. They must never go in the carts.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The bulky pickup uses the one free collection a year, with e-waste set out unbagged. The four Alameda County hazardous waste facilities are free to Alameda County residents with no appointment, and Recycles Day is open to CVSan residents and businesses by appointment.
When & how
Book the curbside pickup with Alameda County Industries on (510) 483-1400, or drive to the Hayward facility at 2091 West Winton Ave. on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, to the Oakland facility at 2100 East 7th Street from Wednesday to Saturday, or to a CVSan Recycles Day event by appointment.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the garbage, recycling and organics carts, because the district states they must not be disposed of there. Wipe personal data before the device leaves the house, then follow the county drop-off rules: stay in the vehicle with the items in an unlocked trunk, bring Alameda County identification, and stay within 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit with containers no larger than five gallons.

What stays out of the bulky pile

Construction and demolition debris, concrete, rocks, brick and dirt are refused, and so is household hazardous waste including antifreeze and motor oil and filters. Those materials go instead to a debris box or approved construction facility, or to a county household hazardous waste facility. Cart rules still apply on collection day: carts go out by 6 a.m. with handles to the curb, lids must close, and overflow can draw an overage fee or a non-collection notice.

Take hazardous waste and electronics to a county facility

A household with paint, batteries, electronics, chemicals, motor oil, fluorescent bulbs or other household hazardous products.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to Alameda County residents at any of the four facilities, with no appointment required and Alameda County identification at the gate. Businesses and residential landlords use a separate service.
Arrange it
Drive to Hayward at 2091 West Winton Ave. or Oakland at 2100 East 7th Street, among others, stay in the vehicle with the material in an unlocked trunk, and the staff unloads it for you.

Each visit is limited to 125 pounds or 15 gallons in containers no larger than five gallons or 50 pounds, which must be sturdy, sealed and leak-proof. Facilities are shut on their closure days and on listed holidays, the waste has to be transported by the household resident rather than a hauler, and the service is not open to businesses.

With a new purchase

Drop mattresses, electronics or construction material at Davis Street

Alameda County households and businesses with up to five mattresses or box springs a day, appliances and electronics, tires, carpet, or a construction and demolition load that needs certified recycling.

Cost & conditions
The operator publishes free mattress drop-off for the first five items per day and a per item fee beyond that, plus a general environmental charge on invoice charges, but it does not publish a gate rate for mixed or construction loads. Confirm the accepted material and the price before loading.
Arrange it
Drive the load to the Davis Street complex in San Leandro. The operator page carries the services and the program details; use it for directions because the page does not print a street address.

Mattress drop-off is capped at five items a day before a per item fee starts. Mixed wet trash is not sorted for recyclables, so separate recyclables and organics first, and commercial drivers need a safety vest and hardhat on site.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Castro Valley keeps bulky items on the curb and sends the material that must not go in a cart to a gate. The annual Bulky and Reuse Pick-Up takes furniture, mattresses, televisions, electronics, appliances, scrap metal, textiles, bundled wood and up to four rimless tires, and the hauler sorts it for reuse and recycling before landfill. Everything else needs a trip. Household hazardous waste and electronics go free to the Alameda County facilities, with Hayward at 2091 West Winton Ave. open Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Oakland at 2100 East 7th Street open Wednesday through Saturday, using Alameda County identification and staying within 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. Mattresses can also be dropped free at the Davis Street facility in San Leandro, up to five a day. Renovation material moves in an Alameda County Industries debris box or to a district-approved permitted facility, because the curbside route refuses it. CVSan Recycles Day at Canyon Middle School
