Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are accepted at the transfer station and are listed as non-chargeable residential waste, with refrigerators named explicitly alongside stoves, ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, washers, dryers and water heaters.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Non-chargeable residential waste at the McFarland-Delano Transfer Station, where the county lists large appliances including refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers among the items a household may dispose of without cost.
When & how
Deliver during the site's open days, Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and keep the load off the road on a Tuesday or Wednesday when the gate is closed.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, secure the doors and keep the appliance upright on the load. Cover the load before leaving, because an untarped or unsecured load draws an extra charge, and ask the gate attendant if a unit needs special handling before it goes to the transfer face.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Cover and secure every load before the gate

Kern County charges extra for an untarped or unsecured load, so tarp or tie down anything headed to the McFarland-Delano Transfer Station. At the site, stop at the gatehouse for the load check, take recyclables to the diversion area, take the rest to the transfer face, follow the speed limit signs and follow the directional arrows.

The Delano transfer station is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays

The McFarland-Delano Transfer Station opens Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., so nothing can be dropped on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Every county disposal site closes for New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, the 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Only Kern County waste is accepted, and some streams are refused

Waste generated outside Kern County is refused at every county disposal site, and the transfer station will not take firearms or explosives, hazardous waste, hot ashes, liquids of any kind or non-friable asbestos. Anything out of the ordinary should be cleared with Kern County Public Works before it is loaded into a vehicle.

Household chemicals travel with limits and stay in the vehicle

A resident may carry no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous material per vehicle per trip, no single container may hold more than five gallons, materials must not be mixed and containers must be closed, sturdy and not leaking with the original label or a clear description of the contents. At the facility an attendant hands you a short form for your name, address and signature and removes the material from your trunk or back seat while you fill it in, and business waste is not accepted at the events.

City of Delano Public Works Refuse Department and Kern County Public Works

Ask the city about a special pickup

A Delano household with a large item it would rather not haul, in a city whose Refuse Department lists special pickups among the services it provides.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no special collection charge and no item list for one, so the Refuse Department at 661-721-3303 or the franchise hauler STRR at 661-725-0265 confirms whether the item is collected, when, and what it costs.
Arrange it
Call the city Refuse Department or STRR, describe the item and follow the collection arrangement you are given.

Special pickups are a listed city service rather than a published programme, so there is no printed item list, no published fee and no guaranteed collection day until the department confirms the arrangement.

Self-haul to the McFarland-Delano Transfer Station

A Kern County household in or around Delano with ordinary household trash, appliances, furniture, a mattress, green waste, electronic waste or a construction load that needs a per-ton disposal route.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Residents are not charged a waste disposal fee for ordinary household trash at Kern County disposal sites, which covers appliances, clothing, furniture, mattresses, green waste, cathode ray tube electronics and used motor oil; construction and demolition material, tires, clean inerts and out-of-county waste are charged under the published gate fee schedule.
Arrange it
Cover the load, drive to 11249 Stradley Avenue in Delano on an open day, stop at the gatehouse for the load check and pay by cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard or a gate fee account.

The site is closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and five listed holidays, it takes Kern County waste only, and it refuses firearms or explosives, hazardous waste, hot ashes, liquids and non-friable asbestos. Construction material and tires are charged rather than free.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

The Delano household that hauls its own load drives to the McFarland-Delano Transfer Station at 11249 Stradley Avenue, open Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and the five county holidays. Kern County does not charge residents a disposal fee for ordinary household trash, and that free category covers appliances including refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers, furniture including sofas and mattresses, green waste, used motor oil, paint and electronic waste, with cathode ray tube televisions and monitors listed at no charge. Charged material is separated out: source separated clean inerts such as asphalt, brick and concrete at one per-ton rate, mixed construction and demolition material including carpet, drywall, fencing, wood and pallets at a higher per-ton rate, tires at a price per tire by size, and an untarped or unsecured load at an extra charge or double the gate fee. The gate refuses firearms or explosives, hazardous waste, hot ashes, liquids, non-friable asbestos and any waste generated outside Kern County. Household chemicals that should not be buried go to a Kern County Special Waste Facility in Bakersfield, Mojave or Ridgecrest, or to a one-day collection event, with the Delano event held at the same transfer station each year, and residents may carry no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle per trip in containers no larger than five gallons. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Appliance removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Delano.

How much does appliance removal cost in Delano?

A full-size household refrigerator is $109 as a single item. A washing machine is $109, and a dryer is $109. Other appliances have their own catalog prices. Choose each item to see your exact total before booking; disposal and recycling costs are included in the item price.

Can I get same-day appliance pickup in Delano?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Your pickup is scheduled for a day rather than an exact arrival appointment, and we text you before arrival. Have the appliance disconnected and ready outside by your pickup readiness time.

Can you take a washing machine and dryer in one pickup?

Yes. Add one Washing machine and one Dryer so both units are included in the price. They are separate items, even when you bought them as a set. If yours is a single combined unit or the machines still need to be unstacked, contact us before booking to confirm the scope.

Will you disconnect my appliance or carry it out?

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

Will Kern County take a refrigerator in Delano?

Yes. The McFarland-Delano Transfer Station accepts appliances including refrigerators, and the county lists large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers as non-chargeable residential waste. The site is open Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Kern County household material.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Delano?

The City of Delano Refuse Department runs the Solid Waste Program, with residential, commercial and prison collection, container delivery for new accounts, green waste and recycling monitoring and special pickups, and the city holds a franchise agreement with STRR, South Tulare Richgrove Refuse, at 912 High Street. City Hall is at 1015 11th Avenue and answers at 661-721-3303, while STRR is on 661-725-0265.Official guidance

How does a trip to the Delano transfer station work?

Drive to 11249 Stradley Avenue on a Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and stop at the gatehouse for a load check, because the site is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays and on five county holidays. Take recyclables to the diversion area and the rest to the transfer face, keep the load covered to avoid the untarped load charge, and pay by cash, cheque, card or a prepaid gate fee account.Official guidance

What is free to drop off in Delano?

Ordinary household trash is free for residents, and the county lists large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers, furniture such as sofas, chairs, desks, patio furniture and mattresses, tree trimmings, cathode ray tube televisions and monitors, residential electronics without a screen, green waste, paint, used motor oil and residential batteries among the material that carries no disposal charge. Batteries and paint go to the Special Waste Facility side of the programme.Official guidance

Where do Delano households take paint, batteries and motor oil?

Motor oil and latex paint can be recycled through the county's programmes, while batteries and other household chemicals go to one of the permanent Kern County Special Waste Facilities in Bakersfield, Mojave or Ridgecrest, or to a one-day household hazardous waste collection event. One of those events is held at the McFarland-Delano Transfer Station, with the 2026 date listed as September 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and business waste is not accepted.Official guidance
