Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Electronic waste is recyclable material that may not be buried, so it goes to the Santa Maria Regional Landfill, where up to five e-waste items are accepted free. A bulky device such as a printer or a television needs a call ahead so the site can confirm space.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free for up to five electronic waste items at the Santa Maria Regional Landfill, 2065 East Main Street, Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. A bulky electronic item such as a printer or television should be confirmed by phone first, and abandoning electronic waste anywhere else is illegal disposal of hazardous waste.
When & how
Drive the devices to the Santa Maria Regional Landfill at 2065 East Main Street, open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and call 805-925-0951 extension 7270 first if the item is bulky such as a printer or a television.
Get it ready
Keep electronic waste out of the carts and off the curb, because California and the city treat abandoned electronics as illegal disposal of hazardous waste, and wipe personal data before handover.

Load the vehicle in the order the Recycling Park asks for

The Santa Maria Regional Landfill at 2065 East Main Street is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Recycling Park sits ahead of the trash face so recyclable material can be sorted instead of buried. The city asks drivers to load in this order from the cab backwards: construction and demolition material, green waste, scrap metal, appliances, mattresses, tires, cardboard, electronic waste, organics, commingled recyclables and concrete last. State law requires recyclable and organic material to be separated from the trash before arrival, and an unsorted load can be charged the posted hard to handle rate.

The hazardous waste drop has its own days and limits

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is at the same address, on the immediate left after the main gate, and it opens for residents free on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each trip is limited to 15 gallons of liquid waste or 125 pounds of dry waste, containers have to have properly fitting lids and be no larger than five gallons each, material must not be combined within a container, and the load has to be packed so nothing can tip, spill or break in transit. Household chemicals, paint, batteries, bulbs, propane tanks and sharps are refused in the trash and in the carts.

Some material may never be buried

The city publishes two lists of material the landfill will not bury. Recyclable material has to be sorted and taken to the Recycling Park, and it covers electronics, glass, construction and demolition debris including drywall, cement and asphalt, metals, organic waste, paper and cardboard, plastics, and the other group of whole tires, white goods and appliances, and mattresses. Hazardous material goes only to the household hazardous waste facility, and it covers automotive fluids, batteries, chemicals and cleaning products, compressed cylinders such as propane, helium and fire extinguisher tanks, fluorescent lights and mercury items, garden chemicals, paints, pool and hobby supplies, sharps and printer cartridges.
