Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions, computers, cellphones and other electronic devices are household hazardous waste in Torrance, so they do not go in a cart and go instead to a county drop-off center, a paint and e-waste retailer programme, or a county collection event.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes electronic devices as household hazardous waste and points to the county drop-off centers and to a retailer take-back programme for electronic waste only, while the same large item page says electronics are one of the two categories collected and recycled rather than landfilled and also lists electronic waste among the prohibited items. Because those two statements point in opposite directions, confirm with the City at 855-354-5623 before adding a device to the annual large item pickup. The permanent county drop-off centers are free to Los Angeles County residents.
When & how
Take the devices to the Gaffey Street collection center at 1400 North Gaffey Street in San Pedro, open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. except holidays and rainy days, or to the EDCO recycling and transfer center at 2755 California Ave in Signal Hill on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The City also lists a retailer take-back programme for electronic waste only and county one-day collection events.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of all three carts, because the trash bin refuses electronics and hazardous waste and California makes it illegal to put any battery in the trash or recycling cart. Tape the terminals of lithium batteries or bag each one separately, keep the load inside the county per trip limit for collection events, and expect to give your address at a county collection center because devices from residents without a valid address are refused.

Right place.

The large item pickup is booked, not set out on demand

One free large item collection is available a calendar year per address, up to twenty items, and it has to be booked with the sanitation line at 855-354-5623. Materials cannot go out earlier than 12 hours before the scheduled pickup, small items must be tied or bagged, the pile goes where recycling is collected and at least five feet from the carts, and a cancellation has to be made at least a day ahead.

Hazardous material and electronics go to a drop-off

Paint, cleaners, motor oil, auto products, batteries, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, mercury equipment, sharps, medicine, non-empty aerosol cans and electronic waste cannot go in any cart or on the large item pile. Take them to the Gaffey Street collection center at 1400 North Gaffey Street in San Pedro on weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or to the EDCO center at 2755 California Ave in Signal Hill on the second and fourth Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., both free to county residents.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Torrance collects from the curb with its own crews, so the self-haul side of a household's waste is hazardous material and a renovation load. Household hazardous waste and electronic waste go to a county drop-off: the Gaffey Street collection center at 1400 North Gaffey Street in San Pedro on weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or the EDCO center at 2755 California Ave in Signal Hill on the second and fourth Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., both free to county residents, with a reuse center at EDCO for partially used household products. Renovation material is different: construction debris is refused on the large item pickup and in the carts, so the route is a container from a licensed private hauler, with a Public Property Encroachment Permit at 310-618-5898 if it sits on City property. The City also keeps a reference list of local transfer stations in Gardena, Long Beach, Compton, Wilmington, Downey, Signal Hill and Carson, which it marks as subject to change and tells residents to call about pricing and accepted material, and Torrance residents with proof of residency can receive discounted City rates there. County household hazardous waste and electronic waste drop-off

Gaffey Street S.A.F.E. Collection Center

1400 North Gaffey Street, San Pedro, CA 90731

Household hazardous waste and electronic waste, including cleaning products, paints, motor oil, auto products, batteries, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, mercury-containing equipment, CRTs, computers, televisions, cellphones, DVD players and non-empty aerosol cans, along with paint from the paint stewardship programme and electronic waste taken by a retailer take-back programme.

Los Angeles County residents only, and anyone dropping off has to give an address, because devices from residents without a valid address are refused. Explosives, ammunition and radioactive material are not accepted, and the county's published per trip limit for its collection events is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle, so confirm the limit that applies at this center when you arrive.

Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except holidays and rainy days. Los Angeles County publishes the same hours and address for this center.

No charge. Free for Los Angeles County residents at the county's permanent household hazardous waste collection centers.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Torrance.

How much does TV removal cost in Torrance?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Torrance?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Where do televisions and computers go in Torrance?

To a county household hazardous waste drop-off. The nearest are the Gaffey Street collection center at 1400 North Gaffey Street in San Pedro, open weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. except holidays and rainy days, and the EDCO recycling and transfer center at 2755 California Ave in Signal Hill on the second and fourth Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both are free to Los Angeles County residents.Official guidance

Where do household batteries go?

Not in any cart. The City says batteries, especially the lithium-ion cells in phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools and earbuds, should never go in the trash or recycling because they start fires in trucks and at recycling facilities. Rechargeable, lithium primary, button cell and alkaline batteries all go to a participating drop-off, and every type is also accepted at a county collection center or a county mobile event.Official guidance

Can electronics go out with the large item pickup?

The City's own page is inconsistent on this, because it says electronics and metal appliances are collected and recycled rather than landfilled while also listing electronic waste among the prohibited items on the same page. Ask the sanitation line at 855-354-5623 before adding a device to the pickup, and use a county drop-off in the meantime.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Torrance?

The City's own Public Works Sanitation Division, which runs weekly trash, recycling and organics collection for about 29,500 single family homes, duplexes and select three and four unit properties. Customer service is 855-354-5623 Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and commercial and multi-family property service runs through private haulers instead.Official guidance

What does weekly collection cost a household?

The monthly rate depends only on the size of the trash container, and the City publishes a five year schedule of increases through July 1, 2027. Recycling and organics containers carry no monthly charge, up to two extra recycling or organics carts are free apart from the delivery fee, and an additional refuse container carries its own published monthly rate.Official guidance

Is there a discount for a senior or disabled resident?

Yes. The low income senior and disabled rate requires a 64-gallon refuse cart, a resident who is 62 or older or permanently disabled, and a household income inside the programme limits. Applications go through the Finance Department utility billing line at 310-618-5830.Official guidance

Can I take my own load to a transfer station?

The City publishes a reference list of local transfer stations open to the public, in Gardena, Long Beach, Compton, Wilmington, Downey, Signal Hill and Carson. The City marks the list as reference only and subject to change, asks residents to call ahead about prices, hours and accepted materials, and notes that Torrance residents can receive discounted City rates with proof of residency.Official guidance
