The local disposal guide
Hartford runs its own collection for single family homes, multifamily buildings of six units or less and small condo associations, with city issued bins out after 4 p.m. the night before pickup and back inside within a day. The bulky waste program is the one that matters for a clean-out: the city defines bulky waste as appliances, electronics, small bundles of tree branches, tires, furniture, mattresses and anything else too large for the bin, and every one to six unit property gets two free pickups per unit a year of up to five items. Extra collections cost 75.00 each, or a 10.00 permit covers up to four trips to the transfer station, and setting bulk items out without scheduling one first carries a 99.00 fine. Paint, chemicals, batteries and propane go to the Metropolitan District's household hazardous waste collections, which cycle through the region and stop in Hartford at the MDC Operations Facility on Maxim Road on October 24, 2026.
