You know it needs to go. The price, the pickup day and knowing it is done should be easy to settle, too.

A replacement is on the way.

Give the old couch its own pickup day. Check what your retailer will remove, then book the part you still need handled.

The right sofa. The right price.

Count the sections, not the cushions.

A loveseat, a sleeper and a sectional can look similar in a photo. Match the shape and features so your online price covers what is actually going.

Three structural sectional modules slightly separated, with all cushions remaining on their bases.
This example has three structural sections. The cushions do not add to the count.

A straight sofa or loveseat

Choose Standard sofa for fixed seats with no pull-out bed or reclining mechanism. One whole sofa is one item.

A sectional

Count its structural sections, not the loose cushions. Choose the piece count, then check for a sleeper or reclining feature. One sectional booking covers the configuration you select.

A pull-out bed or reclining seats

Choose Sleeper sofa or Reclining sofa for those mechanisms. A single reclining chair has its own Recliner choice. All sofa types also includes futons and sofas with a chaise.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named on the list of items the transfer station takes and the city specifically says these items are never collected in the curbside cart. Yard furniture is named on the same list, so a couch or a patio set goes to River Road with a dump ticket.

City cost & eligibility
From $30 for for a dump ticket covering a minivan or a pickup with a bed up to six feet, with larger vehicles and trailers priced higher on the published ticket list. Shelton residents with proof of residency, hand unloading at the station, and no material generated outside Shelton.
When & how
Buy the ticket at 41 Myrtle Street during business hours and deliver the furniture to 866 River Road between 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
Get it ready
Keep the piece whole where you can so it can be handled by hand, keep it out of the curbside carts, and keep hazardous material and construction debris in their own loads.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Proof of residency and a prepaid ticket come before the load

The transfer station at 866 River Road asks for proof of residency, which can be a valid Connecticut driver's licence, a current Shelton tax bill with a matching photo ID or a current utility bill with a matching photo ID. No waste generated outside Shelton is accepted, every vehicle is unloaded by hand, and scavenging is not allowed. The dump ticket is bought in advance at the Shelton Public Works and Highway Department, 41 Myrtle Street, open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and it is paid for by cash or check, with the price set by the vehicle and the size of the load.

Asphalt roofing material is not accepted, and hazardous waste items are saved for the collection day.

The automated carts have their own rules

Shelton collects only in the approved carts: the brown cart for trash, collected weekly, and the blue cart for single stream recycling, collected every other week, with the cart set out the night before, the arrow facing the street and the handle toward the house. Trash has to be in plastic bags and no plastic bags may go in the recycling cart, and an overloaded cart may not be collected at all. Paint, solvents, gasoline, soil, acids, oil, hot ashes, medical waste, exposed needles, sand and rocks are barred from the carts, with one exception the city prints: latex paint is non hazardous and may go in the trash cart once it is completely dried. Missed collections go to Interstate Waste Services at 203-929-5488 and cart problems to Public Works at 203-924-9277.

Can you pick up my couch today?
