FAQ

Should I rent a dumpster or hire junk removal?

Dumpster rental ($200–$500 for 7 days) is better for multi-day renovation projects with unknown volumes of debris. Junk removal ($79–$300) is better for specific items, same-day needs, or when you live somewhere a dumpster can't easily be placed. For 1–5 household items, per-item junk removal is almost always cheaper.

Dumpster rental and junk removal solve the same problem — getting rid of unwanted material — but they work completely differently. The right choice depends on what you're getting rid of, how much there is, and your timeline.

What dumpster rental costs:

Residential roll-off dumpsters typically cost $200–$500 for a 7–10 day rental period, depending on size and location:

Dumpster sizeTypical costHolds approximately
10-yard$200–$3501 room of furniture, light renovation
15-yard$275–$4002–3 rooms, mid-size cleanout
20-yard$350–$500Full home cleanout, large renovation

Additional costs:

  • Overweight fees: $50–$100 per ton over the included weight limit (usually 1–2 tons)
  • Extended rental: $5–$15 per day if you need it longer than 7–10 days
  • Street permits: Some cities require a permit ($50–$150) to place a dumpster in the street if your driveway can't accommodate it
  • Prohibited items: Most rental companies won't take mattresses, tires, appliances with refrigerant, hazardous materials, or electronics — you'll need to handle these separately

What junk removal costs:

Per-item junk removal (Dropcurb): starts at $79 for the first item, +$19–$59 per additional item. Volume-based junk removal (1-800-GOT-JUNK, LoadUp): $150–$600+ depending on truckload volume.

Choose dumpster rental when:

  • You're doing a renovation, demolition, or home cleanout over multiple days or weeks
  • You don't know exactly what you'll be disposing of — ongoing projects where debris accumulates
  • You have construction debris (drywall, concrete, lumber, tile) — junk removal services typically don't take construction waste
  • You have 5+ pickup-truck loads of material
  • You want to work at your own pace over several days without scheduling around a pickup

Choose junk removal when:

  • You have specific items (couch, mattress, appliances) — you pay per item, not by volume
  • You need it gone same-day (dumpsters typically take 2–3 days for delivery)
  • Your HOA prohibits dumpsters in driveways or on the street (common in planned communities)
  • You don't have a driveway or safe place to put a dumpster
  • You're removing 1–5 items from a house and don't want to manage a rental
  • You want someone else to do the physical work

The HOA problem with dumpsters:

Many HOAs prohibit dumpsters in driveways or on the street, citing visual impact. Some will fine you for having one. Dropcurb's curbside model typically complies with HOA rules because the items are at the curb for hours, not days, and there's no large metal container parked in view. If your HOA has issued a violation notice, same-day junk removal is the compliant solution.

What junk removal companies won't take:

Construction debris (concrete, tile, drywall, lumber), hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, asbestos), medical waste, large quantities of dirt or soil. If your project produces these materials, a dumpster is your only option for those specific items.

The simplest decision rule:

If you can list every item you want removed and it's fewer than 10 specific pieces, per-item junk removal is almost certainly cheaper and faster. If you're doing a renovation and don't know what you'll have at the end of the week, rent the dumpster.
