Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Special curbside pickup for bulky items

Accepted with preparation

A resident requests a special curbside pickup for anything too large for the gray cart, and the county prices each item at 30.00 or 50.00.

City cost & eligibility
From $30 for the published price for one bulky item at the lower price on the county list. The 30.00 price covers items such as any size mattress, a bed frame and box springs, barstools, bathroom sinks, toilets and tubs, a barbecue grill without the tank, a cabinet per unit, 20 cardboard boxes counted as one item, carpet at 10 feet by 10 feet per item, doors, furniture including chairs, chest, couch, desk, dressers and tables, an entertainment center broken down, exercise machines, a fence section per eight feet, up to 13 bags of insulation, a lawn mower with no oil or gas, a residential microwave, a sectional sofa up to two pieces, 10 bags of solid waste, disassembled swing sets, televisions under 50 inches and a vacuum. The 50.00 price covers a clothes dryer, commercial large appliances, a dishwasher, a freezer, a hot water heater, a commercial microwave oven, an oven or stove, a refrigerator, a television 50 inches or larger, a unit air conditioner, a washing machine and a water softener.
When & how
Call Solid Waste Customer Service at 813-272-5680 to schedule the pickup, and make the request before placing trash at the curb for the weekly collection.
Get it ready
Prepare each item the way the price list expects it: a grill without its tank, a lawn mower with no oil or gas, an entertainment center broken down, a swing set disassembled, a sectional sofa limited to two pieces per item, and insulation bagged up to 13 bags. If an item is not on the published list, call customer service for a price rather than guessing, and remember that self hauling to a county facility is the alternative.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is on the 30.00 per item curbside list, with a sectional sofa priced as one item up to two pieces.

City cost & eligibility
$30 for the published price for one furniture item on the special curbside bulky list. The county names chairs, chest, couch, desk, dressers and tables at 30.00 per item, and a sectional sofa is priced as one item with a maximum of two pieces. The request is made through Solid Waste Customer Service at 813-272-5680 before trash goes to the curb.
When & how
Call 813-272-5680 to schedule, and set the furniture out only for the arranged collection.
Get it ready
Break down an entertainment center before it goes out, keep a sectional to two pieces for the single item price, and leave a usable piece for donation if a local charity will take it, since the curbside service is a disposal route.

Mattresses, box springs and bed frames

Accepted with preparation

Any size mattress is 30.00 per item on the county's curbside list, and a bed frame with box springs is priced the same way.

City cost & eligibility
$30 for the published price for any size mattress on the special curbside bulky list. The county lists any size mattress at 30.00 per item, and a bed frame and box springs at the same price, with the request made through 813-272-5680 before trash is placed at the curb.
When & how
Call 813-272-5680 to schedule the pickup, and put the mattress out only for the arranged collection.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the recycling stream, and remember that a mattress does not count against the 10 cubic yard self haul allowance if it goes out on the paid curbside service instead.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Large appliances are 50.00 per item on the curbside list, and appliances can also be self hauled to a Community Collection Center.

City cost & eligibility
$50 for the published price for one large appliance on the special curbside bulky list. The 50.00 price covers a clothes dryer, commercial large appliances, a dishwasher, a freezer, a hot water heater, a commercial microwave oven, an oven or stove, a refrigerator, a unit air conditioner, a washing machine and a water softener, while a residential microwave and a lawn mower with no oil or gas are 30.00 each. Appliances may instead be taken to a Community Collection Center by a county solid waste customer with a photo ID and a copy of the property tax bill, inside the 10 cubic yard annual allowance.
When & how
Call 813-272-5680 to schedule the curbside pickup, or use a Community Collection Center, open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Drain the oil and gas from a lawn mower, keep the unit empty, and prepare a refrigeration unit so it can be handled safely. At a Community Collection Center the bulky waste and appliance load has to be unloaded by hand and a dump trailer is not allowed.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

A television goes out on the priced curbside list, and other household electronics are free to drop off at a Community Collection Center with a photo ID.

City cost & eligibility
From $30 for the published curbside price for a television under 50 inches. A television under 50 inches is 30.00 per item and a television 50 inches or larger is 50.00 per item in the curbside bulky program. Household electronics are also accepted at Community Collection Centers for any county resident with a photo ID at no charge, and the household hazardous waste collections do not take electronics at all.
When & how
Call 813-272-5680 to schedule a television pickup, or take household electronics to a Community Collection Center during its Monday through Saturday hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the household hazardous waste load, because the county excludes them there and routes them to the Community Collection Centers. Remove personal data before a computer or drive leaves the house, and wipe or reset anything with an account on it.

Exercise equipment

Accepted with preparation

Exercise machines are named on the county's 30.00 per item curbside bulky list.

City cost & eligibility
$30 for the published price for one exercise machine on the special curbside bulky list. Exercise machines are named at 30.00 per item, and the request is made through Solid Waste Customer Service at 813-272-5680 before the machine goes to the curb.
When & how
Call 813-272-5680 to schedule the pickup, and put the machine out only for the arranged collection.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart and keep the loose weights with it so one item price covers the load, and consider a Community Collection Center self haul for a machine that fits the county's bulky waste allowance.

Construction and demolition material

Special rules apply

Project debris is not on the curbside bulky list, so a load goes to a county transfer station or the Southeast County Landfill at the published per ton rate.

City cost & eligibility
The county publishes processable disposal at 130.00 per ton and non processable at 69.00 per ton, with a minimum charge of 10 percent of the applicable rate when a transaction is 200 pounds or less, but it classifies a load at the facility scales, so confirm what a construction load will be charged by calling Solid Waste Customer Service at 813-272-5680 before hauling.
When & how
Take the load to a county transfer station or the Southeast County Landfill during facility hours, after calling to confirm the classification and the rate that applies.
Get it ready
The curbside bulky list covers individual household pieces such as doors, cabinets, a fence section, bagged insulation, carpet and 10 bags of solid waste, but it is not a construction haul, so keep a project load separate and deliver it to a county facility at the published rates. Separate yard and wood waste from mixed debris, because yard and wood waste processing has its own 65.00 per ton non processable rate.

Tires

Accepted with preparation

A county solid waste customer may drop up to 12 tires a year at a Community Collection Center as part of the annual assessment, and more go to the landfill at the published tire rates.

City cost & eligibility
From $12 for the published price for one passenger tire without a rim at the county landfill. Up to 12 tires a year are included with the annual assessment for a county solid waste customer at a Community Collection Center, with the same photo ID and property tax bill required as for bulky waste. Beyond that limit the county charges 249.00 per ton or 12.00 each for a passenger tire without a rim under 18 inches, 261.00 per ton or 27.00 each for a tire with a rim, and 249.00 per ton or 22.00 each for a semi truck, oversized or off road tire over 18 inches.
When & how
Take up to 12 tires a year to a Community Collection Center during its Monday through Saturday hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or deliver more to the Southeast County Landfill after calling 813-272-5680.
Get it ready
Bring the photo ID and a copy of the property tax bill for the tire drop off, because the Community Collection Center tire service is limited to county solid waste customers, and separate tires from the rest of the load so the count is clear at the gate.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Self hauling needs county paperwork and hand unloading

A county solid waste customer taking bulky waste, appliances or tires to a Community Collection Center shows a photo ID and a copy of the property tax bill, unloads the material by hand, and cannot use a dump trailer. The allowance is 10 cubic yards a year for bulky waste and appliances, resetting on October 1, and 12 tires a year, so a household should ask the attendants how much of the allowance is left.

Hillsborough County Solid Waste Services, which serves the unincorporated University community

Schedule a special curbside bulky pickup

A county household with a mattress, furniture, an appliance, an exercise machine, a television, a lawn mower with the fuel drained or another item too large for the gray cart.

Cost & conditions
From $30 for the published price for one bulky item at the lower price on the county list. Most household items are 30.00 per item, including any size mattress, a bed frame and box springs, furniture, an exercise machine, a residential microwave, a lawn mower with no oil or gas, disassembled swing sets, a television under 50 inches and up to 13 bags of insulation, while a large appliance, a commercial unit, a water softener or a television 50 inches or larger is 50.00 per item. An item that is not on the list is priced by customer service.
Arrange it
Call Solid Waste Customer Service at 813-272-5680 before placing anything at the curb for the weekly collection, and set the items out for the arranged pickup.

The service is priced per item, so a group of pieces can add up quickly, and some items have conditions such as a grill without its tank, a lawn mower with the fuel drained, an entertainment center broken down, a sectional sofa limited to two pieces, and insulation bagged up to 13 bags. A cheaper route for a household that can drive the load is a Community Collection Center inside the annual allowance.

Hillsborough County Solid Waste Services, which serves the unincorporated University community

Self haul to a Community Collection Center

A county solid waste customer who can drive bulky waste, appliances, tires, paint, electronics or recycling to a county facility.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Residential customers receive 10 cubic yards of disposal for bulky waste and appliances a year as part of their annual assessment, with the allowance resetting on October 1, and up to 12 tires a year are also included. Once the allowance is used, material has to go to a county transfer station or the Southeast County Landfill at commercial disposal charges.
Arrange it
Use the Northwest County Solid Waste Facility at 8001 W. Linebaugh Avenue in Tampa, or any of the other four centers, open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a photo ID and a copy of the property tax bill for bulky waste, appliances and tires.

Bulky waste has to be unloaded by hand, no dump trailers are allowed, and the 10 cubic yard allowance is about a double axle trailer load or a loaded box truck while a loaded pickup truck carries only about two cubic yards. Paint and electronics need only a photo ID, and electronics are not accepted at the hazardous waste collections.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

University is unincorporated, so Hillsborough County runs the whole system. Weekly curbside collection is funded by an annual disposal assessment of 208.60 per dwelling unit and a collection assessment of 302.17, and a large item needs a special curbside pickup that is priced item by item: 30.00 for a mattress of any size, furniture, an exercise machine, a lawn mower with the fuel drained, a residential microwave or a television under 50 inches, and 50.00 for a refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, dishwasher, oven or stove, hot water heater, unit air conditioner, water softener or a television 50 inches or larger, arranged through 813-272-5680 before trash goes to the curb. The cheaper route for a household that can drive is one of five Community Collection Centers, open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., where a county solid waste customer with a photo ID and a property tax bill gets 10 cubic yards of bulky waste and appliance disposal a year, resetting on October 1, and 12 tires a year, with hand unloading and no dump trailers and the Northwest County site on Linebaugh Avenue also taking yard and wood waste and giving away mulch. Household hazardous products go to the Saturday collections: the first Saturday at Sheldon Road, 9805 Sheldon Road in Tampa, the second Saturday at South County in Gibsonton and the third Saturday at Hillsborough Heights in Seffner, all from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a state issued photo ID, and electronics go to a Community Collection Center instead because the hazardous waste collections do not take them. A construction load is not a curbside item, so it goes to a county transfer station or the Southeast County Landfill, where disposal is 130.00 per ton for processable material and 69.00 per ton for non processable with a minimum charge of 10 percent of the rate for a load of 200 pounds or less. Can you pick up bags of junk today?
