Where can you donate old stereo equipment?

In Los Angeles, St. Vincent de Paul accepts mint-condition stereos and working electronics, while the Salvation Army’s national FAQ excludes large console model stereos. For a broken set, do not assume donation acceptance: Los Angeles SVdP says it does not take broken electronics. Before contacting a program, note the receiver model, gather the speakers and cables, test the equipment, and take a photo so the organization can assess the exact setup.

Choose the route by condition and design

A working compact receiver with its speakers is the strongest donation candidate. For a vintage console, check the organization’s current rules first because large console model stereos may be excluded. For a broken set, ask before transporting it; acceptance is not guaranteed, and Los Angeles SVdP excludes broken electronics.

When donation is unsuitable, check a current device-specific electronics recycling option or arrange pickup for an accepted stereo system or speakers. Confirm the item and local terms before going.

If the speakers are unsuitable for reuse, check speaker disposal rules by device type.

Prepare the stereo for review

Write down the receiver model, gather matching speakers and cables, test whether the system works, and photograph the complete setup. Keep the parts together when possible so the organization can judge whether it is a usable stereo rather than an incomplete collection of components.

If donation does not work out

For an accepted stereo setup or separate speakers already outside and accessible, Dropcurb handles loading, transport and disposal. Choose Stereo system for one home stereo setup with its receiver and speakers; choose Speakers for separate speakers, counting each speaker individually. Dropcurb standard pickup does not include indoor carry-out, so move the equipment outside before pickup if you can, or use a service that includes indoor carrying.
