Who will pick up old household fans and electric cooling units?

The right route depends on the item. In New York City, DSNY accepts small mostly metal or plastic appliances such as desk fans through recycling, while refrigerant appliances require a CFC-removal appointment and some R600a or R32 units are excluded. The EPA rule is that refrigerant must be recovered before an appliance is dismantled or disposed of. For a working non-built-in AC, Salvation Army may offer scheduled pickup after confirming the item locally. Identify the model and refrigerant label first, then contact the route that matches the unit.

Identify the unit before arranging pickup

Treat a household fan differently from a refrigerant appliance. A box, pedestal, tower or desk fan is a fan; a portable AC, window AC or dehumidifier is a cooling appliance that may require refrigerant handling. Check the model label and whether the unit is working before choosing a receiver.

Prepare the unit safely

Do not cut refrigerant lines or vent refrigerant. Ask the disposal facility how it handles an intact appliance, or confirm that refrigerant recovery has already occurred. If a unit is still installed or indoors, arrange any required disconnection and move it to the required staging location before collection.

If the air conditioner still works, check air-conditioner donation requirements before choosing disposal.

If considering retailer haul-away, check Best Buy’s window and portable air-conditioner policy.

When Dropcurb fits

Dropcurb fits accepted leftovers when the municipal or donation route is unavailable or unsuitable. For accepted box fans, standing or desk fans, portable AC units, window AC units and dehumidifiers, Dropcurb handles loading, transportation and disposal when the item is already outdoors and accessible. Customers can book before moving an item outside, but it must be ready outside before pickup. Indoor carry-out and uninstalling a window AC are not included; if you need indoor carrying, use a service that includes that labor.
