Who picks up washer and dryer donations?

The Salvation Army’s national donation FAQ accepts working washers and dryers but excludes gas appliances; local rules still decide whether your unit qualifies. In the Twin Cities, Habitat ReStore accepts washers and dryers that are 10 years old or newer, while Greater Albuquerque ReStore lists washers and dryers and offers free approved large-item pickup locally. Check whether your unit is working, clean, complete, electric, and within the local age limit before scheduling pickup.

Check the receiver’s rules first

Start with the local Salvation Army or Habitat ReStore serving your area. The Salvation Army requires item approval through its ZIP-specific pickup process, and local ReStore rules can differ. Twin Cities requires washers and dryers to be 10 years old or newer. Greater Albuquerque lists washers and dryers and reviews requests for approved large-item pickup.

If you have only a washer or only a dryer, ask the local receiver whether it accepts a single unit or requires a matching pair. Arrange safe disconnection separately, and confirm access or carryout details before pickup; free pickup and indoor removal are not universal.

Prepare the appliance for a donation request

Confirm that the washer or dryer is working, clean and complete, then provide the brand, model, age and photos if the receiver requests them. Tell the receiver whether the dryer is gas or electric; the Salvation Army excludes gas appliances. Do not assume an older unit qualifies just because it still runs, because local age limits can apply.

If donation routes do not work

Dropcurb can handle accepted washing machines and dryers that are already outside and accessible. A washer is selected separately from a dryer, and the approved dryer definition includes gas or electric models. Dropcurb includes loading, transportation and disposal, but indoor carry-out is not available, so arrange for the items to be moved outside before pickup. Check your item price and available pickup dates before deciding.

If donation is declined, compare other free washer-and-dryer pickup routes.
