Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics go to the authority's hazardous waste drop-off, which charges by the pound for electronics and by screen size for televisions, and the landfill takes electronics by the ton but refuses cathode ray tube material.

City cost & eligibility
From $0.5 for the published per pound charge for computer waste and electronics at the Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off, with televisions charged per set by screen size and the landfill's electronics rate charged by the ton on a self hauled load. Any household bringing material to the Bondurant drop-off during its posted hours, with the same items available by appointment at the Grimes transfer station except that Grimes does not accept electronics or televisions at all.
When & how
Drop off during the posted weekday and Saturday hours at Bondurant, or by appointment at the Grimes transfer station, or take a load to Metro Park East Landfill during its posted hours.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the garbage cart and the recycling cart, remove and set aside any battery the household can take out safely, and expect cathode ray tube televisions and monitors to be refused at the landfill's electronics stream, which leaves the hazardous waste drop-off as the route for those sets.

Houseside collection of household chemicals

An Ankeny household with hazardous waste that cannot be taken to a drop-off during the posted hours.

Cost & conditions
The authority lists houseside collection as a service available for a fee, and the price depends on what is collected, so confirm the materials and the charge before the appointment.
Arrange it
Request the houseside collection through the authority, describe every material being set out, and follow the container and labeling instructions given at the time of the request.

The service is for household hazardous waste rather than for trash, furniture or construction material, and the same acceptance rules apply as at the drop-off, including the limit on the free weight allowance.
