Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Dropcurb does not remove TVs from walls or do indoor carrying. Arrange the help you need before pickup day, including the trip down interior stairs or through an elevator.

  2. Choose a permitted outdoor spot.

Use a stable, accessible location with a clear path for loading. Keep the TV separate from anything staying. Check building rules before placing it in a shared pickup area.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronic waste is collected by request on the first full week of every month, and Illinois bans disposing of it in a landfill.

City cost & eligibility
The monthly collection is offered to DeKalb homes that have LRS garbage and recycling cart service, and the program page publishes no separate charge for it, so confirm the terms with LRS at 844-633-3577. The City's own page states separately that the Illinois EPA regional sites take household hazardous waste at no charge.
When & how
Submit a request through the hauler at least 48 hours ahead, Monday to Friday, then put the devices at the curb by 6 a.m. on the regular collection day during the first full week of the month. The published 2026 collection windows run month by month, for example the first week of January, February and March and later windows in the year.
Get it ready
Keep electronic waste separate from the refuse, recycling and yard waste containers so the driver can identify it, and put small items in a brown paper bag or a box no larger than 24 by 24 by 24 inches marked E-WASTE. A television or monitor over 100 pounds or larger than 60 inches has to be arranged with LRS directly because it may need special equipment.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Electronics, appliances and hazardous waste all need a request first

Nothing from those three streams goes out as a surprise: appliances must be prescheduled with LRS before the service day, electronic waste needs a request at least 48 hours ahead for the first full week of the month, and household hazardous waste is scheduled directly with the resident after a request. Everything else, including the free weekly bulk item, goes out by 6 a.m. on the regular collection day.

City of DeKalb Public Works with LRS

Request the monthly electronic waste collection

A household with a television, computer, monitor, printer or another accepted device to dispose of.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The monthly electronic waste collection is included for DeKalb homes with LRS garbage and recycling cart service, with no separate charge published on the program page.
Arrange it
Request the collection at least 48 hours ahead on a weekday, then put the devices at the curb by 6 a.m. on the regular collection day during the first full week of the month, separate from the carts and marked E-WASTE when they are in a box or bag.

Appliances, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, household batteries, light bulbs, liquids and medical equipment are refused, and a television or monitor over 100 pounds or larger than 60 inches needs a call to LRS first.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

DeKalb's routes run through the hauler and through state and county programs rather than a city drop-off yard. LRS collects one bulk item a week free with the carts and charges a prepaid amount for each additional item, and it takes appliances only when they are prescheduled, electronic waste on a requested monthly collection day, and household hazardous waste through a home collection scheduled directly with the resident. Outside the hauler, the City points residents at the Illinois EPA regional household hazardous waste sites, which take the material at no charge, with two regional sites, one in Naperville and one in Rockford, that keep weekend hours. Used motor oil follows the Illinois EPA site and the health department's periodic collections, and liquid latex paint waits for the health department's annual collection while dry paint and its container may go in the regular trash. Prescription medications go to the DeKalb Police Department's 24 hour drop box in the front lobby, plastic bags go to participating grocery stores, and electronics are banned from Illinois landfills, which is why the monthly collection exists. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in DeKalb.

How much does TV removal cost in DeKalb?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in DeKalb?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

How does electronic waste collection work in DeKalb?

Request a collection from LRS at least 48 hours ahead on a weekday, and the devices go out on the regular collection day during the first full week of the month. Accepted items include cable and satellite receivers, cell phones, computers, converter boxes, DVD players, keyboards, mice, fax machines, MP3 players, printers, scanners, servers, televisions and monitors, VCRs and game consoles. Illinois bans putting electronics in a landfill.Official guidance

How should electronic waste be set out?

Separate from the carts and easy for the driver to see, with small items in a brown paper bag or a box no larger than 24 by 24 by 24 inches marked E-WASTE, at the curb by 6 a.m. A television or monitor over 100 pounds or larger than 60 inches needs a call to LRS first.Official guidance

How is DeKalb's trash service set up?

The City contracts LRS as the exclusive collector for homes receiving weekly curbside or alley service, and the service is paid through the City utility bill. Refuse, recycling, yard waste and organics all run on one weekly collection day, Wednesday through Friday by address, with everything out by 6 a.m.Official guidance

What is the fastest way to clear a house in DeKalb?

Use the free weekly bulk item for furniture, a mattress or a bed frame, wrap each mattress and box spring in plastic, and prepay additional items for the same week. Appliances have to be prescheduled, electronics wait for the monthly requested collection, and hazardous material goes through the home collection, with construction debris needing its own special pickup estimate.Official guidance

What happens to Christmas trees?

Real trees are collected on the collection day during the first two weeks of January at no charge. The tree should be bare of bags, tinsel, lights, ornaments, wire and glitter and preferably cut under seven feet, and it will not be collected if it is frozen to the ground. After January 15 prepayment and prescheduling are required.Official guidance

What do I do with leftover paint?

Oil based paint and flammable oils go through the household hazardous waste home collection or a state regional site. Dry latex paint and its container may go in the regular trash, but liquid latex paint may not be taken by haulers and is saved for the health department's annual latex paint collection, usually in the summer.Official guidance

Where do old medications go?

To the DeKalb Police Department's 24 hour drop box in the front lobby, which the City lists as the route for prescription medications.Official guidance
