Televisions and monitors

Not on the regular city route

Televisions are covered electronic devices under the Illinois law the City cites, cannot go in the garbage, and the City points residents to local drop-off places with published charges.

City cost & eligibility
The City prohibits electronics from the solid waste collection and cites Public Act 95-0959 on recycling or reusing electronic equipment, and it publishes no City television collection, so a set goes to one of the listed drop-off places instead.
When & how
Take the television to one of the drop-off places the City lists rather than setting it out for the garbage collection, and confirm the current terms with the location before travelling.
Get it ready
Keep the set out of the cart and out of the yard waste or recycling containers, and clear the household's own data from any device that stores it before a drop-off.

Electronics, computers and printers

Not on the regular city route

Electronics are prohibited from the Pekin collection and the City points residents to retail drop-off places that charge by the item.

City cost & eligibility
The City prohibits household electronics in the collection and lists electronics on the material that will not be accepted at all, so the route runs through the drop-off places the City names rather than through the City service.
When & how
Use a listed drop-off place and pay the item charge there, then confirm the current acceptance list with that location, because the retained City extract is truncated after the first location.
Get it ready
Keep electronic items out of the garbage, the recycling cart and the yard waste bags, and remove personal data before a device is dropped off.

Weekly collection with the cart at the curb by 6 a.m.

The Solid Waste Department collects solid waste curbside every week for single-family dwellings and duplexes, and the City is the sole provider of residential collection for homes and buildings of four units or fewer. All garbage goes to the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, the day itself is set by the address on the City collection map, and the 96-gallon cart is a one-time purchase made on the second floor of City Hall with delivery normally within one to two business days.

Holidays push the rest of the week one day later

When Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year's Day falls on a weekday, there is no garbage, recycling or yard waste pickup that day, that day's pickup moves to the following day and the rest of the week runs one day behind. If one of those holidays falls on a Saturday or Sunday the collection week runs on its regular schedule even when City Hall is closed.

What the ordinance keeps out of the collection

Since Ordinance 2960 took effect on April 19, 2021, the collection does not take building or construction material, bulk items too large for a 96-gallon cart including furniture and mattresses, household appliances and electronics, animal remains and animal waste that is not placed in a separate bag or container, hazardous waste, batteries, motor oil and other material that the disposal facility cannot accept, or paint cans unless the paint is completely dried. Tires, large batteries, appliances, water heaters, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals are refused outright, and the City code separately prohibits dumping refuse, grass, leaves or branches in an alley, gutter, street or other public way, storing combustible refuse so that it creates a fire hazard, or leaving refuse where the wind can scatter it.

Yard waste and recycling run on their own terms

Yard waste is separated from garbage under the Illinois law the City cites and is collected weekly from April 7 through December 19, and all of it is recycled. Recycling is a voluntary curbside programme: a household makes a one-time purchase of a 64-gallon roll-out cart, which is billed on the following month's water and sewer bill with no additional monthly charge, and only the owner of the property can be billed, so a tenant buys containers at the City. Christmas trees may go out with the regular garbage collection and are the only trees the City allows.

City of Pekin Solid Waste Department

The City collection account the household already pays

A household in a single-family home or a building of four units or fewer that is deciding what can go out with the weekly cart.

Cost & conditions
$27 for monthly garbage collection fee billed as a separate line on the wastewater bill, listed at 27 dollars from May 1, 2026 after 25 dollars from May 1, 2024 and 26 dollars from May 1, 2025, and rising to 28 dollars from May 1, 2027, with a one-time 60 dollar purchase for a 96-gallon cart. City of Pekin residential accounts for single-family homes and buildings of four units or fewer, where the City is the sole provider of solid waste collection.
Arrange it
Set the cart at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day shown on the City collection map, and call 309-477-2325 with questions about the route, the cart or the bill.

The fee covers household garbage, yard waste and recycling only, and the collection will not take construction material, bulky items such as furniture and mattresses, appliances, electronics, hazardous waste or paint that is not completely dried.

Local electronics drop-off places

A household with a television, monitor, computer, printer or similar equipment that Illinois law keeps out of the landfill.

Cost & conditions
From $25 per television and per computer monitor at the drop-off places the City lists, with big screen televisions at 35 dollars each. Households delivering electronic equipment to one of the local drop-off places the City names, which sets the charge rather than the City.
Arrange it
Deliver the equipment to a listed drop-off place and pay the charge there, and confirm with that location which items it currently accepts before making the trip.

The amount is set by the receiving location, Illinois law keeps covered electronics out of the landfill, the City does not collect electronics from the curb, and the retained City extract ends after the first location so the current list has to be confirmed.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Pekin publishes no self-haul facility of its own. The City garbage page mentions only that Christmas trees are the one tree allowed in the landfill, without naming a landfill, an address or hours, and the retained bodies carry no transfer station or public drop-off site for household waste. A household that wants to haul its own load therefore has to ask the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 where material can be taken, and the cart has to be used for household garbage because the City is the sole provider and the code prohibits refuse left in an alley, gutter, street or other public way. The published drop-off route that does exist is for electronics, at the local places the City lists under Public Act 95-0959, and the City sells its own 96-gallon garbage cart and 64-gallon recycling cart rather than accepting a household-hauled load. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Electronics removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Pekin.

How much does electronics pickup cost in Pekin?

A computer monitor is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Choose the actual devices and quantities to see your combined price online. A separate desktop tower and monitor are separate items. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; review the total and any applicable tax before payment.

Can you pick up old electronics today in Pekin?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates shown at checkout and have the prepared items outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done. The booking is for a day, not an exact arrival time.

Does computer removal include my monitor and printer?

Desktop computer covers one tower or one all-in-one computer. Add a separate monitor, printer or laptop as its own item if it is going too. For small devices, cables and chargers together, choose Box of electronics and check the description before booking.

Do you erase data from old computers?

Data erasure and certified data destruction are not included in Dropcurb removal. Back up the information you need, then follow the manufacturer’s sign-out and reset instructions before pickup. If a device cannot be erased or contains sensitive business information, arrange suitable data handling before giving it away. Completion photos confirm the pickup, not data destruction.Official guidance

Can I book one box of old cables and small electronics?

Yes. Box of electronics is an existing option for small devices, cables and chargers together in one box. A monitor, desktop computer and printer each have their own item option. Send a photo before booking for a large or heavy box, unusual contents or separate batteries so we can confirm the fit.

Where does a television go in Pekin?

Not in the garbage cart. The City cites Public Act 95-0959 on recycling or reusing electronic equipment and prohibits electronics from the solid waste collection, and it lists local drop-off places for electronics such as televisions, computers and printers. The published drop-off charges are separate from the household collection fee.Official guidance

How do I dispose of a computer or printer?

The City prohibits electronics from the solid waste collection and points residents to drop-off places for equipment such as televisions, computers and printers, with a published charge per television and monitor and a higher charge for big screens. The City extract retained for this packet is truncated after the first location, so confirm the list and the current charge with the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Pekin?

The City of Pekin Solid Waste Department does. The department has three divisions, garbage, recycling and yard waste, collects solid waste curbside every week for single-family dwellings and duplexes, and the City code makes it the sole provider of residential collection for homes and buildings of four units or fewer. The department can be reached on 309-477-2325.Official guidance

What will the City collection not take?

Under Ordinance 2960 the collection refuses building and construction material, bulky items too large for a 96-gallon cart including furniture and mattresses, household appliances and electronics, hazardous waste, batteries, motor oil and paint that is not completely dried. Tires, large batteries, appliances, water heaters, electronics, paint and hazardous chemicals are refused outright, and carpet is the one standing exception when it is rolled into bundles no longer than four feet and no heavier than fifty pounds.Official guidance

How does the cart and the bill work?

A 96-gallon garbage cart is a one-time purchase of 60 dollars made on the second floor of City Hall at 111 South Capitol Street, and the cart is normally delivered to the curb within one to two business days. The collection fee is billed on the monthly wastewater bill as a separate line item, listed at 27 dollars a month from May 1, 2026 and rising to 28 dollars from May 1, 2027, and it covers garbage, recycling and yard waste together.Official guidance

How do I get rid of furniture, an appliance or a mattress?

Not through the City collection. Bulk items are defined as anything too large for the 96-gallon cart and are prohibited, and appliances and electronics are refused as well. Pekin publishes no bulky item pickup, so the household arranges a private removal, and it can call the Solid Waste Department on 309-477-2325 to confirm anything the collection might still accept. Televisions, computers and printers go to the local drop-off places the City lists, with a charge per television or monitor.Official guidance
