Match your item

Construction cleanup starts with the right items.

We currently accept the doors, toilets and bathroom vanities listed here, already detached and ready outside. Choose each item separately. Mixed drywall, tile, concrete, lumber and demolition rubble are not accepted, including in bags.

Doors

Count each detached door panel separately. Have it removed from its hinges before pickup. A whole installed doorway or garage door is not the same item.

Toilets

Choose Toilet for an ordinary household toilet that has already been disconnected, drained and moved outside. Text a photo before booking if yours is broken or has loose sharp pieces.

Bathroom vanities

Choose the small, standard or large bathroom vanity that matches your sink cabinet. A makeup table has a separate choice. Plumbing disconnection and removal from the wall happen before pickup.

Remodeling and construction debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition material is written out of the household refuse cart, alongside dirt, rock and concrete. The county says the cart is for household waste and offers pick-up of non household refuse only on a limited basis, with a fee for material that is not considered household refuse.

City cost & eligibility
The county publishes no rate for construction or demolition debris. Call the Shawnee County Solid Waste Department at 785.233.4774 to ask whether a limited non household refuse pickup is available for the load and what it costs, before the work produces the material.
When & how
There is no refuse day for construction debris, so nothing goes to the curb. Arrange the load with the department or a private hauler in advance, and keep it out of both carts while the arrangement is being made.
Get it ready
Keep demolition material, dirt, rock, concrete and paint cans that still hold paint out of the refuse cart, because the county names each of them as material the cart does not take. Keep treated and painted wood out of the yard waste bundles as well.
Shawnee County solid waste FAQ with the base refuse rate for City of Topeka water customers, the large item answer naming box-springs and mattress, a couch or sofa with the sofa sleeper metal springs removed and scheduled, household furniture, fifteen bags of leaves or grass under 45 pounds and bundled tree limbs or carpet no longer than 4 feet and 18 inches in diameter, the restriction that metal items are scheduled by phone with a minimum $65.00 fee, the electronics answer that the household hazardous waste facility accepts all electronic waste with a $40 fee for CRT televisions and monitors, the red and blue recycling weeks, and the list of items that cannot go in the refuse cartShawnee County service levels and rates page with the 95 gallon rate table at $22.00 a month for city customers and $23.00 for county customers as of February 1, 2023, extra refuse carts at $5.00 each a month, curbside recycling at $3.50 per cart a month, the weekly refuse and biweekly recycling service, one bulky item per week with the refuse on the regular trash day, the allowance of up to 15 bags of yard waste including bundled branches and trimmings, the limited pick-up of non household refuse and the storm debris noteShawnee County customer recommendations flyer with the 7:00 AM set out time, the 32 gallon and 65 pound personal container limits, the 45 pound bag limit, the 15 bag yard waste allowance on non holiday weeks, the four foot by 18 inch bundle limit for branches, shrubs, boards and carpet, the statement that one bulky item is accepted on non holiday weeks, that material not considered household refuse can be picked up for a fee, that dirt, rock and concrete cannot go out with household refuse, that no liquids are accepted, and the three feet of clearance asked around the recycling cart

Cut and tie anything long before it goes out

Branches, shrubs, boards and carpet go out cut and tied in bundles no longer than four feet and 18 inches in diameter, and bagged waste stays under 45 pounds a bag. A personal container has to hold no more than 32 gallons, have handles, and weigh no more than 65 pounds, and the county supplies carts for households that do not want to use their own.

Shawnee County Solid Waste Department

Ask about a non household refuse pick-up

A household clearing remodeling material, a load of debris, or another load the refuse cart will not take.

Cost & conditions
No rate is published for the separate pickup. Call the Shawnee County Solid Waste Department at 785.233.4774 before the load is produced, because the department says it picks up non household refuse only on a limited basis and that material not considered household refuse can be lifted for a fee.
Arrange it
Call the department at 785.233.4774 and describe the load. The department says it also works with local entities to facilitate the removal of storm debris, which is a separate arrangement from the household refuse route.

Construction and demolition material, dirt, rock and concrete cannot go in the refuse cart, and the department does not publish a resident rate for the separate pickup. Nothing about this route is automatic.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Construction debris removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Topeka.

How much does construction debris removal cost in Topeka?

Pricing is per accepted item. A detached door is $99 as a single item, an ordinary toilet is $79, and a small bathroom vanity is $99. Larger vanities have their own choices. Select the listed items to see the exact combined price. These prices do not cover mixed rubble or loose building materials. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; applicable sales tax appears before payment.

Can I get same-day toilet or vanity pickup in Topeka?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Arrange disconnection, removal and the move outside first, then have the fixture ready by the time in your confirmation. We text you before arrival and provide pickup photos when it is done.

Will you disconnect a sink or take a door off its hinges?

The fixture must already be detached, disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange plumbing, electrical work, removal from walls or hinges, and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb handles loading and haul-away from your outdoor pickup spot.

Can I add bags of drywall, tile or other demolition waste?

Mixed drywall, tile, concrete, lumber and demolition rubble are not accepted. This page offers pickup for the listed doors, toilets and bathroom vanities that are already removed. Do not book loose building materials as household trash bags or as an extra item. Arrange suitable disposal for those materials with your contractor or a debris specialist.

Can a door, toilet and vanity go in the same pickup?

Yes. Add each listed fixture separately and choose the correct vanity size. Each detached door panel counts as one item. The combined price appears before you book. Keep the fixtures together outside, separate from anything staying, and add a location photo on your order page.

Can construction debris go out with the trash in Topeka?

No. The county lists construction and demolition material as material that should not be placed in the household refuse cart, along with dirt, rock or concrete, paint cans with paint still in them, motor oil, car batteries and acids. Non household refuse is picked up only on a limited basis and material that is not considered household refuse can be lifted for a fee, so call the department at 785.233.4774 to arrange the load.Official guidance

Who handles trash and large item pickup in Topeka?

The Shawnee County Solid Waste Department. The department serves the county whose seat is Topeka, supplies the carts, bills the monthly refuse service and runs the weekly large item pickup. The office is at 1515 NW Saline St, Suite 225 in Topeka and the number is 785.233.4774. The City of Topeka programs page routes trash and recycling questions to the same county department.Official guidance
