Appliances travel on the whitegoods route rather than the bulky item route. The city defines whitegoods as recyclable items too large for the green cart, and the list names stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, washers, dryers, air conditioners and water heaters. Curbside collection is priced per item, and the Resource Recovery Center takes them at no cost.
City cost & eligibility
$25 per appliance on the Newton curbside whitegoods collection, with drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center at no cost for appliances and metal items. When & how
Pay online and the whitegoods pickup is arranged on the same Thursday schedule as the bulky item collection when payment clears by 10 p.m. on Sunday, or take the unit to the Resource Recovery Center and check in with the attendant. For a refrigerator or freezer the Mass Save programme runs its own pickup, which has to be booked separately.
Get it ready
Remove all refrigerator and freezer doors and secure all drawers before the unit goes out, which is the city's own safety instruction. Drain fluids from a lawn mower or snow blower if that is the item going out, keep the unit out of the blue trash cart and the green recycling cart, and note that the centre is the cheaper route while the curbside pickup is the convenient one.
Carts go out by 7 a.m., or after 4 p.m. the day before
Both the blue trash cart and the green recycling cart go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, or as early as 4 p.m. the day before. Each cart sits within three feet of the curb with the wheels and handle facing the house and the lid opening toward the street, and at least three feet from parked cars, hydrants, poles, trees, bulky waste, other carts and mailboxes. No material outside the cart is collected, and an obstructed cart may be rejected.
Bulky items are the single non-recyclable pieces too large for the blue cart, collected at a per item price. Whitegoods covers appliances, scrap metal, electronics and large rigid plastic, collected at another per item price with a free drop-off at the Resource Recovery Center apart from televisions and monitors. Mattresses and box springs are a third route with their own prices, because the state banned their disposal. Booking the right route is what keeps a pickup from being refused.
Orange overflow bags go beside the cart, and smaller carts are available
Orange overflow bags may be set beside the trash cart on collection day as long as they do not obstruct it, with no limit on the number of bags but no recyclables, hazardous material or other banned items inside. A household that needs less capacity than the standard cart can ask customer service on 617-796-1000 for 35-gallon carts, and a household whose green cart overflows most weeks can request an additional green cart at no cost.

The programme is limited to residential electric customers and it covers refrigerators and freezers rather than appliances generally, so a stove or washer still goes on the city whitegoods route. Confirm eligibility and the rebate terms with the programme before booking.

Appliances, electronics and metal items at no cost apart from televisions and monitors, which carry a per item fee, and mattresses and box springs at a lower per item price than the curbside collection. The centre also runs the seasonal latex paint exchange, taking usable latex paint in cans less than ten years old and more than half full.
Proof of payment is required at the gate for televisions, monitors, mattresses and box springs, and the receipt quantity has to match the load. The paint shed is kept locked and every drop-off has to be approved by the attendant, and unusable paint has to be dried out and put in the trash instead. The centre is drive-through only at some events, with residents staying in their cars, and it can flood and close temporarily after heavy rain or snow.
June 1 to September 27: Tuesday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., closed Mondays, Sundays, holidays and occasionally during heavy rain. The city prints only the summer window on this page, so call customer service on 617-796-1000 for the other months and after a storm. The paint exchange runs from May to October and is closed on Saturdays.

When will my paid pickup happen?+
Payments received by 10 p.m. on Sunday are arranged for the Thursday of the following week, unless that Thursday carries a trash delay. The city emails within one to two business days to confirm, sends a reminder on the business day before the collection, and sends a confirmation after it is done.
