Refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, toilets and similar large household appliances are collected as bulk items on the same day as the regular refuse collection.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Novi residential addresses under the refuse fee. Household appliances only, set out on the regular collection day with any published preparation completed first.
When & how
Set it out by 7 a.m. on the regular refuse day, and call Priority Waste at 586-228-1200 ahead of time as a courtesy so the driver knows the item is coming.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer before set-out, since the City states the homeowner does not have to have the refrigerant removed. Drain all water from a water heater. Small household appliances such as a microwave can go into the trash container instead.
Trash, recycling and bulky items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, and carts should be back in by that evening. When an observed holiday falls on or before your collection day, service is one day behind for the rest of that week.
City ordinance keeps bins off the curb until 24 hours before the collection day, and receptacles have to be removed within 12 hours after collection. Keep containers where they do not create a nuisance for neighbors.
Bulk items ride the regular collection day instead of a booked appointment. The City asks for a courtesy call to Priority Waste at 586-228-1200 so the driver can be prepared, and missed collections are reported to Priority Waste as well.
Refuse goes out in the provided cart, refuse bags or watertight containers with tight fitting lids and lifting handles, no larger than 35 gallons, and no single container and its contents over 60 pounds. Items that will not fit a container are handled individually when they meet the same limits.
Paint, chemicals, liquids, motor oil, car batteries, propane tanks and other hazardous material never go in a cart, in a refuse bag or at a recycling drop-off site. Take them to a RRRASOC household hazardous waste event, or to the hazardous waste drop-off in Livonia on a weekday.

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

What will Novi refuse at the curb?+

Liquid waste, motor oil, oil based paint, gasoline, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and propane tanks belong at a household hazardous waste event rather than the curb or the recycling cart.
