Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions, computers and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are recycled at the county drop-off with prices set by device type and screen size, cell phones are free, and Minnesota prohibits putting cathode ray tube devices in mixed municipal solid waste.

City cost & eligibility
From $5 per computer, laptop, printer, stereo, DVD or Blu-ray player, VCR, copier or game console at the Olmsted County Recycling Center Plus. Households and other generators at the Recycling Center Plus. Cell phones are free, flat screen monitors and televisions are 10 dollars up to 32 inches, 20 dollars from 33 to 60 inches and 30 dollars over 60 inches, and CRT or projection monitors and televisions are 20 dollars up to 32 inches, 40 dollars from 33 to 42 inches and 60 dollars over 42 inches.
When & how
Take the devices to the Recycling Center Plus at 305 Energy Parkway NE, open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and measure a television or monitor before the trip because the fee is charged by size.
Get it ready
Wipe or remove the storage from a computer, laptop, tablet or phone before it leaves the house. Keep electronics out of the garbage cart, because cathode ray tube devices are banned from mixed municipal solid waste in Minnesota and the county's cart list of unacceptable waste does not include electronics as a curbside stream.

Self-hauling runs through the Recycling Center Plus

A self-hauler is a generator that does not contract with a Class A, Class B or Class C licensed hauler and instead brings its own material to the Recycling Center Plus at 305 Energy Parkway NE, and a self-hauler may not collect from anyone else for compensation. The drop-off opens Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., takes pre-sorted recyclables including aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars, cardboard, paper, plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5, tin and steel cans and clean scrap metal free of charge, and charges a service minimum plus per item fees for garbage, appliances, furniture, mattresses, electronics, tires, brush and construction material. Residential municipal waste that would otherwise reach the landfill must come here.

Some material never goes in the garbage cart

The county ordinance lists unacceptable waste as the non-hazardous materials that are prohibited from disposal with mixed municipal solid waste and names tires, lead acid batteries, major appliances, used oil, yard waste and tree and brush waste. Minnesota adds its own rule for electronics: putting cathode ray tube devices in mixed municipal solid waste is prohibited, which is why televisions and monitors are recycled at the drop-off. Household chemicals, paints, batteries and sharps go to the Hazardous Waste Facility, and sharps go only to that facility, which takes household sharps free from residents who treat themselves and publishes its own disposal procedure.

Olmsted County Environmental Resources with licensed private haulers

Haul it to the Recycling Center Plus yourself

A Rochester household with a load of household garbage, a mattress, an appliance, furniture, electronics, tires, brush or construction material that can be moved in a personal vehicle.

Cost & conditions
From $5 for minimum self-haul service charge at the Olmsted County Recycling Center Plus. Self-haulers and licensed Class D haulers at 305 Energy Parkway NE. The service charge is 5 dollars per 30 gallons in increments up to 150 gallons and 30 dollars per cubic yard for large quantities, pre-sorted recyclables are free, and bulky items, appliances, mattresses, electronics and tires carry the fees published in the county schedule.
Arrange it
Drive to 305 Energy Parkway NE on a Tuesday to Saturday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Wednesday and Saturday lines included, and sort the load before arrival so the free recyclables stay separate from the charged material.

Mattresses and automotive tires are limited to eight per day, semi and tractor tires are refused, Styrofoam is not accepted in the recycling area, and a load of nine or more tires has to go to the Kalmar Landfill at 435 dollars per ton after a call to 507-328-7070.

Read the drop-off rules

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Rochester households can skip the hauler entirely and become a self-hauler, which Olmsted County defines as a generator that brings its own material to the Recycling Center Plus rather than contracting with a Class A, B or C licensed hauler, and a self-hauler may not collect from anyone else for compensation. The drop-off at 305 Energy Parkway NE opens Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-sorted recyclables including aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars, cardboard, paper, plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5, tin and steel cans and clean scrap metal are free. Charged items in household quantities include garbage, appliances, furniture, mattresses, televisions and computer systems, tires, carpeting, grills, brush and construction material, with the service charge starting at a minimum and bulky items priced in four categories from 15 to 30 dollars. Mattresses and automotive tires are limited to eight per day and semi or tractor tires are refused, with nine or more tires going to the Kalmar Landfill at 435 dollars per ton after a call in advance. Household chemicals, paints, batteries, mercury products and sharps go to the Hazardous Waste Facility at the same address, and yard waste goes to the compost site across the street, open every day during daylight hours with a suggested donation. Residential garbage that would otherwise reach the landfill is directed to the drop-off, and the Kalmar Landfill itself is built for licensed and registered haulers, so a household car load is never the expected route there. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Rochester.

How much does TV removal cost in Rochester?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Rochester?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

What does a television cost to recycle in Rochester?

The county drop-off prices televisions by screen size: a flat screen up to 32 inches is 10 dollars, from 33 to 60 inches is 20 dollars and over 60 inches is 30 dollars, while a CRT or projection set is 20 dollars up to 32 inches, 40 dollars from 33 to 42 inches and 60 dollars over 42 inches. Cell phones are free, computers, printers and game consoles are 5 dollars each, and Minnesota prohibits putting cathode ray tube devices in mixed municipal solid waste.Official guidance

How do I check one odd item before the trip?

Use the county's own item lookup. The Recycling Center Plus page carries a waste wizard where you type the name of an item and the county tells you how to recycle or dispose of it, and the same page lists the free pre-sorted recyclables and the charged household items. The Environmental Resources office answers at 507-328-7070 for anything the wizard does not cover.Official guidance
