Cape Girardeau collects its own trash and recycling. The City issues a tan 64-gallon trash cart and a dark green 96-gallon recycling cart, runs weekly collection on each address's route day, and asks residents to keep the lid shut, put all trash in the cart, and leave four feet of clearance around it. Anything too large for a cart goes out through a Wednesday Special Pickup, which has to be booked by three in the afternoon on the Tuesday before, and each residential customer gets one free pickup a year. Appliances, furniture, mattresses, extra bags and bundled limbs are all on that route, with published charges once the free pickup is used or once the load takes more than ten minutes to handle. The City also runs a drive-through Recycling Center and a Transfer Station, so glass, electronics, used motor oil and yard waste each have a drop-off, while tires, batteries, concrete, railroad ties, automobile parts, pesticides, oil-based paint and hazardous material are refused everywhere.
