Convenience centers and the windshield access permit
Accepted with preparation
Currituck County runs eight manned convenience centers for residential solid waste and recycling only, and a resident has to display a Currituck County Access Permit on the vehicle windshield to use one. The centers carry the everyday streams, from bagged garbage in the compactor to bulky waste, white goods, yard waste, electronics and personal vehicle tires.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The county publishes no separate charge for the residential streams its convenience centers accept. The permit itself is applied for through the county's online access permit page, and a replacement permit for a lost one costs 75 dollars, with no more than two replacements in the two year period and damaged permits returned to the County Manager's office for replacement at no fee.
When & how
The centers are open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Moyock and Grandy opening at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., with Moyock, Grandy and Carova Beach open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays, the Carova Beach arrangement running from the weekend before Memorial Day through the weekend after Labor Day.
Get it ready
Put the access permit on the windshield before arriving, put bagged household garbage in the compactor rather than the recycling area, empty and rinse recyclable containers and keep them loose rather than bagged, and keep commercial or contractor material out of the centers entirely because the county sends it to the transfer station. The centers close on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and close at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Do not attempt to remove refrigerant yourself. Send us the model and refrigerant label if handling requirements are unclear, or the label identifies R600a or R32, so we can confirm whether your appliance can be handled before you book.
