A few pieces, one pickup

Your room has changed. The old furniture can go.

The desk you no longer use. The dresser that doesn’t fit the new layout. The chairs left over after a move. Choose the pieces you’re done with and give them a pickup day, without arranging a quote visit.

Different pieces. One clear total.

Choose each piece

A table and four chairs are five items.

You don’t need to guess how much space your furniture fills in a truck. Match each piece to the catalog, then add its quantity. Your total updates as you go.

Tables and chairs

Choose the table, then add each chair separately. Coffee tables, side tables and dining tables have their own options. A large or substantially heavy table has a different choice.

Dressers and mirrors

Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.

Desks and bookshelves

Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

Couches, sofas and upholstered furniture

Accepted with preparation

Household furniture is the first bulky example the city publishes, so a sofa, a couch or an upholstered chair belongs at the curb rather than in a rollout. It leaves on the normal garbage day, on a bulky pass that runs separately from the garbage truck.

City cost & eligibility
Hickory does not publish a per-item furniture rate. Its adopted fee schedule prices special handling for bulky, junk and other loose items placed at the curb, with a handling and loading minimum, an administrative fee and tonnage charges that can apply by weight, so confirm the pieces and the price with Public Services at (828) 323-7500 before the item goes out.
When & how
Set the furniture at the curb on the regular garbage day. Hickory collects garbage weekly and runs the bulky items as a separate pass on that same day, so an ordinary piece needs no appointment.
Get it ready
Keep the piece at the curb with clearance around the rollout, the recycling rollout and any yard waste. Do not build the pile around an appliance, a television, tires or renovation material, because those items follow their own routes.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Garbage leaves the curb in the green rollout before 7 a.m.

The green rollout goes to the curb with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the road before 7 a.m. on the collection day and comes back in the same day. It sits within 2 feet of the curb and 5 feet from any obstruction such as low hanging branches or wires, stays closed rather than stuffed, holds only bagged garbage, and never holds liquids or automobile parts. Hickory runs the bulky and yard waste passes on that same collection day.

Bulky items wait at the curb with clearance around the rollouts

Bulky items are placed at the curb and the city asks that they sit where proper clearance is kept around the rollout containers and the yard waste, so crews can reach each pile. Keep a furniture pile separate from appliances, screens, tires and renovation material, and keep the pile off any storm drain or sidewalk. The bulky collection runs on the same day as the regular garbage run, in a separate pass.

City of Hickory Public Services Sanitation Division, with Catawba County Solid Waste and Republic Services

Use the curbside bulky set-out on garbage day

A household inside the city limits with a sofa, a mattress, a box spring, an upholstered chair or another bulky household piece that is too large for a rollout.

Cost & conditions
The city's adopted fee schedule places bulky, junk and other loose items at the curb under a special handling charge with a handling and loading minimum, an administrative fee and tonnage charges that can apply by weight, so confirm the price of the pile with Public Services at (828) 323-7500.
Arrange it
Put the items at the curb on the normal garbage day and keep clearance around the rollouts. No appointment is published for an ordinary bulky item.

Appliances are excluded from this route and need the call-in pickup, screens belong on the county electronics route, and the city asks that bulky items stay separate from the yard waste and never block the sidewalk or a storm drain.

Drive the load to a Catawba County convenience center

A household that would rather take a mattress, furniture, an appliance or scrap metal to a staffed county site instead of waiting for the curbside pass.

Cost & conditions
An attendant sorts and prices each drop, and the county charges by the bag or by the size of the truck or trailer load, so the amount for a mattress or a furniture piece is set on site. Call Republic Services at (828) 256-2158 with a question about a specific site.
Arrange it
Take the load to one of the five staffed centers during its published hours; the Blackburn site at 3864 Rocky Ford Road in Newton is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Recycling is free at the centers.

Household garbage has to be bagged, bulky waste carries a fee, and appliances and scrap metal are taken at the Rocky Ford Road site rather than at every center. Loads larger than a pickup are sent on to the landfill.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling a Hickory load means driving west to Newton. The Blackburn Landfill at 4017 Rocky Ford Road takes municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, wood and yard material, tires and separated clean asphalt, brick, block and concrete, and it runs free residential drop-offs for electronics, televisions, paint and household batteries; a safety vest is required on site and each load is weighed. The staffed convenience centers are the cheaper stop for a mattress, a chair or a bagged load, and the Blackburn site at 3864 Rocky Ford Road, just down the road from the landfill, is also the one that takes appliances and scrap metal. Every one of these stops prices by weight or by the load, so call the landfill at (704) 462-1348 or Republic Services at (828) 256-2158 before a trip if the amount matters. Hickory's own drop-offs are smaller: the recycling convenience center on 9th Ave NE beside Fire Station #2 and the solid waste transfer station at 1050 1st Ave SW both take recyclables, and the transfer station also takes used motor oil and antifreeze. Staffed county drop-off for bulky waste, appliances, scrap metal and recycling

Blackburn Convenience Center

3864 Rocky Ford Road, Newton, NC 28658

Bagged household garbage, bulky waste such as furniture, chairs and mattresses, appliances and scrap metal, antifreeze, cooking oil, motor oil and filters, and the same recyclables the county curbside program takes.

A staffed drop-off site and not the landfill next door, so do not drive heavy loads to this address. Household garbage must be bagged, an attendant sorts and prices each drop, bulky waste carries a fee, and loads larger than a pickup are sent on to the landfill.

Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; closed on the published county holidays.

The attendant prices each drop by the bag or by the size of the truck or trailer load, and recyclables are free, so the amount for a mattress or a furniture piece is set on site. Call Republic Services at (828) 256-2158 with a question about the site.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Furniture removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Hickory.

How much does furniture removal cost in Hickory?

Choose the type and size of each piece to see its price. For example, a medium dresser is $79 as the first item or $29 as an additional item. Your total starts with the highest first-item price in your selection, then uses the additional-item price for every other item. Review the complete total and any applicable tax before payment.

Can I get same-day furniture pickup in Hickory?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup and choose from the dates shown at checkout. Arrange to have the furniture outside according to your confirmation. You receive a text when your hauler is on the way and photos after collection.

Will you remove furniture from inside my apartment?

Dropcurb starts outside. You arrange indoor carrying, including any interior stairs or elevator trip. We load and take away the furniture from an accessible outdoor location. Check your building’s rules and plan the route out before booking.

Can you take several different furniture items in one pickup?

Yes. Add each piece and its quantity to one booking. A dining table and four chairs are five items; a separate mirror is not included with a dresser. You can mix eligible items from different rooms and review their combined total before paying.

Do I need to take furniture apart before pickup?

You arrange any disassembly needed to move the furniture out of your home and into an accessible outdoor pickup spot. Dropcurb does not provide indoor disassembly or carrying. If you are unsure which catalog choice matches a dismantled or unusual piece, send a photo and ask before booking.

Will the city take a couch or sofa from the curb?

Yes. Furniture is one of the city's bulky examples, and bulky items are placed at the curb and collected in a separate pass on the same day as the regular garbage run. The city's fee schedule prices special handling for bulky and loose curb set-outs, so confirm the pile with Public Services at (828) 323-7500 if you are setting out more than one piece.Official guidance

Which day do garbage and bulky items go out?

Garbage is collected once a week inside the city limits, recycling runs every other week on that same day, and the bulky items are collected in a separate pass on that same day too. Yard waste rides the weekly schedule as well. Call Public Services at (828) 323-7500 if you are not sure which day applies to your address.Official guidance

How much does a Catawba County convenience center charge?

An attendant sorts and prices each drop, charging by the bag or by the size of the truck or trailer load, so the amount depends on what you bring. Recyclables are free, bulky waste such as furniture, chairs and mattresses carries a fee, appliances and scrap metal are taken at the Rocky Ford Road site in Newton, and loads larger than a pickup are sent on to the landfill.Official guidance
