No charge. The brown yard waste rollout is the collection route, with the rollout itself the paid part of the service, and the city publishes no separate charge for grass, leaves or brush that meet the size rules. When & how
Yard waste is collected on the regular recycling and waste collection day unless a holiday week changes it, and brush goes to the curb by 6:00 a.m. on the assigned collection day.
Get it ready
Keep garbage, dirt, construction material, animal waste, bags and boxes out of the brown container, and keep five cubic yards as the rolling 30 day brush limit, laid out no larger than 8 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet. Limbs must be under five feet long and 75 pounds, stacked with the cut ends facing one direction and clear of wires, vehicles and mailboxes, and stumps, logs, mixed loads and anything cut from a vacant lot are refused. Yard waste never goes in the green garbage rollout, because state law bans yard trash from landfill disposal.
Rollout containers go out no earlier than the day before the assigned collection and no later than 6:00 a.m. on the collection day, and every container comes back to the residence by midnight that night. Collection runs between 6:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., so a container still out after 4:30 p.m. is reported to Public Services Administration at 336-243-2489 as a missed pickup.
Bagged trash only, lid closed, three feet of clearance
Only bagged household trash belongs in the green rollout, the lid has to close, and the handles face the residence rather than the street. Containers need at least three feet from vehicles, poles, other containers and brush piles, and the city owns each numbered rollout so it stays with the address when a household moves.
Construction debris of any kind and carpeting are refused, and a container holding them is not emptied, with the driver leaving a violation notification that explains the refusal. Yard waste in the garbage rollout is refused as well, because state law bans yard trash from landfill disposal, and a load mixed with garbage, trash or brush will not be collected at the curb.
Bulky items are placed at the curb or roadside by 6:00 a.m. on the normal garbage collection day, while brush follows its own five cubic yard limit over 30 days with limbs under five feet and 75 pounds stacked one direction. Brush cut from vacant lots, mixed with garbage or junk, or sitting under wires or behind vehicles is refused, so the two piles and the containers all need their own space.
Glass left the rollout, cardboard still needs flattening
Glass is no longer accepted in the blue recycling rollout, so bottles and jars go to one of five cardboard and glass drop off points at Fire Station 2 on Hargrave Road, Fire Station 3 on Biesecker Road, Holt-Moffitt Field on West 9th Avenue, Talbert Boulevard or the State Street parking lot. Recyclables go out the night before or by 6:00 a.m., containers return the same evening, and large cardboard is flattened and set beside the rollout rather than jammed inside it.
