At a Mecklenburg County full-service center one large bulky item, which the fee schedule names as a sofa, chair, table or mattress set, is free for county residents with the free blue entry sticker.
When & how
Book and pay through Waste Pro at 980-325-3640, then set the mattress out on the same day as the regular trash collection. The county centers take a mattress set on their own schedule, Monday through Saturday.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and free of bed bugs, remove the frame and bedding, and do not put the mattress in the garbage cart, because bulk waste is collected separately from household trash.

The bulk stream refuses household hazardous waste, e-waste, batteries and construction and demolition material. Carts must be at the curb with the handle facing the house, three feet from vehicles, shrubs, hydrants, mailboxes and other carts, and must not block sidewalks or sit in the street.

Arrange it
Get the free blue resident entry sticker from the fee booth at Foxhole, Hickory Grove, North Mecklenburg or Compost Central, then use whichever center suits the load. The town lists four sites open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., including 8007 Pence Road in Charlotte as the closest to Matthews.
Mecklenburg County households only, and no business material is accepted with household hazardous waste. Residential customers are limited to two televisions per visit each month, a maximum of 15 automotive or light truck tires is accepted per load without prior approval, a full-service site takes no more than 14 cubic yards with larger loads going to the Foxhole Landfill, and uncovered loads may have fees raised by 50 percent.
