Accepted with preparation

A non Freon appliance is free to drop in Fargo. The transfer station in building 4 at the landfill takes non Freon appliances up to two a month at no charge from Fargo residents with proof of residency, the landfill and the garbage carts ban major appliances outright, and Cleanup Week allows two appliances per household on the curb with the doors removed. A dealer trade-in is the city's other suggestion.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Fargo residents with proof of residency such as a utility bill, at the residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill, which takes non Freon appliances to a limit of two a month at no charge. Commercial accounts pay a disposal fee.
When & how
Haul the appliance to the transfer station during landfill hours, Monday to Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., or set it out during Cleanup Week in May, or ask an appliance dealer about a trade-in when buying a replacement.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from anything that can latch, empty the unit and leave no food or other waste inside it, because Cleanup Week asks for both and the transfer station programme is written for non Freon units only. Keep appliances out of the garbage cart, where major appliances are a published ban.

Refrigerators and freezers

Special rules apply

Fargo splits the appliance answer at the refrigerant line. The transfer station programme is written for non Freon appliances, the landfill and the garbage carts ban appliances outright, and the one route that names a refrigerator is Cleanup Week in May, which takes two appliances per household with the refrigerator and freezer doors removed. There is no published year round route for a unit that holds refrigerant.

City cost & eligibility
No refrigerant unit rate is published. Call the Solid Waste Department at 701.241.1449 to confirm the route, because Cleanup Week takes two appliances per household in May and the free transfer station programme covers non Freon appliances rather than a unit that still holds refrigerant.
When & how
Ask the department first. The Cleanup Week collection runs on the May recycling collection day after a 7 a.m. set-out, and the transfer station runs Monday to Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from the refrigerator or freezer before either route, which the city asks for twice, and empty the unit so no food or other waste stays inside. Keep the unit out of the garbage cart and off the boulevard outside Cleanup Week, because appliances are a published ban for both.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Carts out by 8 a.m. and back in by 6 p.m.

Garbage carts go to the end of the driveway, the alley or the boulevard by 8 a.m. on the collection day and come off the boulevard by 6 p.m. or after collection, whichever is later. Carts need five feet of space from every other object so the arm can grab them, and they never sit on top of a snowbank.

City residential garbage page describing the volume-based programme where an automated arm lifts a city-supplied cart, the city provides all residential garbage collection inside the city limits, the monthly fee follows the cart size the resident selects, and carts go out to the driveway or alley by 8 a.m. and come off the boulevard by 6 p.m.City garbage pricing and rules page with the monthly cart fees of 7 dollars for 48 gallons, 10 dollars for 64 gallons and 15 dollars for 96 gallons charged on the utility bill, the 8 a.m. set out and 6 p.m. return, the five foot clearance around carts, the extra bag fee scheduled on 701.241.1449, the syringe rule requiring a sealed rigid container labelled medical waste inside the garbage cart, the fireplace ash rule, and the banned items list of yard waste, lead acid batteries, used motor oil, tires and major appliances including some microwave ovens

Cleanup Week piles are separated and set out on time

During Cleanup Week each material goes in its own pile, because separate trucks collect tires, appliances, furniture, brush and household garbage. Garbage goes in disposable containers, the piles go out before 7 a.m. on the recycling collection day and no more than one day early, household garbage stays at least four feet from everything else, and refrigerator and freezer doors come off before the appliance goes out.

City Cleanup Week page with the annual free collection of tires, appliances and other large items on the recycling collection day, the 2026 weeks of May 4 to 8 and May 11 to 15 following the A and B recycling calendar, the 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. collection window, the limits of two appliances per household, four tires and rims per household and logs and brush up to 10 inches in diameter, the refusal of building materials such as wood or concrete, the directions to keep electronics and household hazardous waste out of the pile, the one television and one computer per household per month at the hazardous waste facility, the charge for excessive piles, the free year round residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill for Fargo residents only with proof of residency taking non Freon appliances up to two a month plus cardboard, automotive batteries, metals, household garbage, furniture, large items and all in one recycling, the refusal of commercial waste and building materials and concrete there, the landfill hours, the household hazardous waste facility address and hours, and the separation and door removal reminders

The free transfer station trip needs proof of residency

The residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill is open to Fargo residents only, runs with the landfill from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, and asks for proof of residency such as a City of Fargo utility bill. Commercial waste, building materials and concrete are not accepted there even from a resident.

Electronics and hazardous waste stay out of every pile

The landfill and the garbage carts ban electronics and mercury containing devices, and Cleanup Week refuses electronics, paint, stains and varnish as well. Paint, thinners, cleaners, poisons, automotive fluids, fluorescent bulbs and used motor oil belong at the household hazardous waste facility on 43 1/2 Street North, and one computer set and one television per resident a month go there too.

Building materials such as wood or concrete are not collected, electronics and household hazardous waste must not be set out, logs and brush are limited to 10 inches in diameter, and the event runs once a year rather than on demand.

City of Fargo Solid Waste Department

Call for a crew large item pickup

A household that cannot haul the item itself and wants it collected from the property.

Cost & conditions
No rate is published for the service. The city states that the fee for a call-in large item pickup is based on the amount and weight and is added to the homeowner utility bill, so call 701.241.1449 for the current figure. Extra bags outside the cart are 3 dollars each for bags up to 33 gallons.
Arrange it
Call the Solid Waste Department on 701.241.1449 to schedule the collection. The line is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday except legal holidays, and the charge lands on the utility account rather than being paid at the curb.

The service is for small amounts of building material, furniture, appliances and automotive parts rather than a whole house clearance, it has to be arranged in advance, and the household is billed for the weight collected. Apartment residents are told to ask the landlord about large item disposal instead.

Open the Fargo large item disposal page

City of Fargo Solid Waste Department

Haul the load to the city landfill

A household with excess garbage or debris that does not fit the free transfer station programme.

Cost & conditions
From $15 per load for up to 600 pounds of debris at the city landfill scale, with the published 2026 rate table effective January 1 2026 and an additional 25 dollar charge at the scale operator discretion for a load that is not tarped or secured. Residents and businesses delivering waste the landfill accepts, paying by cash, cheque or credit card at the scale house. The landfill may not accept electronics, liquids, hazardous waste, lead, PCBs, manure, septic tank pumpings, infectious waste, mercury containing devices, concrete, tree stumps or roots.
Arrange it
Pull onto the scale at 2301 8th Avenue North, unload into a container on the asphalt surface, then pull back onto the scale and pay. The landfill opens Monday to Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., and item questions go to 701.282.2489.

A load has to be tarped or secured or it may be charged an extra fee, very windy conditions can turn away paper and lightweight loads, and the permit list of refused material is long enough that the landfill is the wrong destination for electronics, liquids, hazardous waste and concrete.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul is the main route in Fargo. The residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill takes furniture, large items, household garbage, metals such as grills, shelving, lawn mowers, patio furniture, snow blowers and bed frames, cardboard, automotive batteries and non Freon appliances up to two a month at no charge from Fargo residents who show proof of residency such as a utility bill, and it runs with the landfill from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Commercial waste, building materials and concrete are excluded from that programme. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 606 43 1/2 Street North is the free drop-off for paints, thinners, stains, varnish, cleaners, poisons, automotive fluids, weed and insect killer, fluorescent bulbs and ballasts, and it also takes one computer set and one television per resident a month, opening 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and the second Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to noon. The city landfill itself takes most household waste for a fee with a 15 dollar minimum for up to 600 pounds per load, but its permit bars electronics, liquids, hazardous waste, concrete, tree stumps and roots, and a load that is not tarped or secured may be charged an extra 25 dollars. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Appliance removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Fargo.

How much does appliance removal cost in Fargo?

A full-size household refrigerator is $109 as a single item. A washing machine is $109, and a dryer is $109. Other appliances have their own catalog prices. Choose each item to see your exact total before booking; disposal and recycling costs are included in the item price.

Can I get same-day appliance pickup in Fargo?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Your pickup is scheduled for a day rather than an exact arrival appointment, and we text you before arrival. Have the appliance disconnected and ready outside by your pickup readiness time.

Can you take a washing machine and dryer in one pickup?

Yes. Add one Washing machine and one Dryer so both units are included in the price. They are separate items, even when you bought them as a set. If yours is a single combined unit or the machines still need to be unstacked, contact us before booking to confirm the scope.

Will you disconnect my appliance or carry it out?

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

How do I get rid of a washer or dryer in Fargo?

Take it to the residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill, which takes non Freon appliances up to two a month at no charge from Fargo residents who show proof of residency such as a utility bill. Cleanup Week in May also takes two appliances per household on the curb with the doors removed. Appliances are banned from the garbage cart and the landfill, so a dealer trade-in is the other option.Official guidance

Where do refrigerators and freezers go in Fargo?

Ask the Solid Waste Department at 701.241.1449, because the routes are split at the refrigerant line. The free transfer station in building 4 at the landfill is written for non Freon appliances up to two a month, the landfill and the garbage carts ban appliances outright, and Cleanup Week in May takes two appliances per household on the curb with the refrigerator and freezer doors removed.Official guidance

Who collects garbage in Fargo?

The City of Fargo Solid Waste Department, which provides all residential garbage collection inside the city limits on a volume-based programme with a city-supplied cart. The monthly fee follows the cart size and lands on the utility bill, carts go out by 8 a.m. and come back off the boulevard by 6 p.m., and the department is at 2301 8th Avenue North with the collection line on 701.241.1449 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday except legal holidays.Official guidance

Which Fargo options are free?

The residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill is free for Fargo residents with proof of residency and takes furniture, large items, household garbage, metals, cardboard, automotive batteries and non Freon appliances up to two a month. Cleanup Week in May is free within its limits of two appliances and four tires per household, and the household hazardous waste facility is free year round within the monthly household quantity limit. A crew pickup at the curb is the paid route, priced by amount and weight.Official guidance

What cannot go in the Fargo garbage cart?

Yard waste, lead acid batteries, used motor oil, tires and major appliances including some microwave ovens are banned from the landfill and the garbage cart, and electronics and mercury containing devices are barred from the landfill as well. Syringes go in a sealed rigid container labelled medical waste inside the cart, and paint, chemicals and fluorescent bulbs belong at the household hazardous waste facility instead.Official guidance
