Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

East Providence collects a mattress, a box spring or one set per household on scheduled Saturdays by appointment, priced per piece, and the season runs from March through December.
City cost & eligibility
$25 per mattress or box spring collected at the curb by appointment. Saturday collection by appointment through the Recycling Office at 401-435-7701, for one mattress, one box spring or one set per household, in the months of March through December only. A mattress that is not torn or damaged can also be dropped at the Resource Recovery campus in Johnston at no fee year-round.
When & how
Call the Recycling Office to book a Saturday pickup inside the March to December window, and put the bedding at the curb on the appointed day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring dry and undamaged, because the free drop-off route only accepts bedding that is not torn, and keep it out of the rubbish cart and the recycling cart. Nothing loose beside a city cart is collected.
Furniture is collected on the city's Friday bulky route, one item per household per week, by appointment only.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for the Friday bulky and furniture collection. The fees it does publish are the mattress charge per piece and the recycling sticker for appliances and metal items, so the bulky appointment itself carries no published price.
When & how
Call 401-435-7701 to book the appointment by noon on Thursday, then leave the piece at the curb after 3 p.m. the same day for the Friday collection.
Get it ready
One item per household per week, at the curb the night before collection and clear of the rubbish cart, recycling cart and yard waste barrels. Cut rugs and carpeting to four-foot lengths and roll and tie them so they count as a bulky item rather than loose material.
Appliances come off the curb once a month on a Tuesday, but only with a recycling sticker bought from the city beforehand.
City cost & eligibility
$25 per appliance set out for the monthly collection, paid in advance as a city recycling sticker. The sticker is bought at the Public Works office at 60 Commercial Way by 10 a.m. on the Thursday before the collection. The published list covers a stove, refrigerator, freezer, hot water tank, built-in microwave, dismantled swing set, dishwasher, washing machine, clothes dryer, gas grill, exercise equipment and other miscellaneous metal items, and an appliance can also be dropped at the Public Works yard.
When & how
Buy the sticker before the Thursday deadline, then put the appliance at the curb no more than twenty-four hours before the collection day. The city collects appliances on the second Tuesday of each month.
Get it ready
Empty and clean a refrigerator or freezer before it goes out, remove or secure doors so nothing can be trapped inside, and keep the appliance out of the rubbish cart and the recycling cart.
Electronics are a city drop-off rather than a curbside item, taken at the Public Works complex on Commercial Way.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city lists e-waste among the items residents may drop off at the Department of Public Works complex, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and publishes no fee for that drop-off.
When & how
Bring the device to 60 Commercial Way Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Get it ready
The accepted list is televisions, CRT monitors, CPUs, printers, cartridges, wire and cable, VHS and DVD players, and anything with a plug including small kitchen appliances such as blenders and toasters. Wipe anything that stores personal data, and keep electronics out of both the rubbish cart and the recycling cart.
Construction, demolition and remodelling debris is the resident's own responsibility, and the city does not collect it.
City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no municipal rate because it does not run the route. Residents are told to take household construction, demolition and renovation material to the landfill in Johnston or to a private collector, and that fees apply, so confirm the current gate price before hauling a load.
When & how
Arrange the disposal directly with the Resource Recovery landfill in Johnston or with a private collector, since neither the rubbish cart nor the Friday bulky appointment takes this material.
Get it ready
Keep construction, demolition and remodelling debris out of the rubbish cart, the recycling cart and the Friday bulky pile, keep yard waste separate because logs and larger wood waste are not collected either, and cover the load for the trip.
Exercise equipment is on the city's recycling sticker list, so it is collected with the monthly appliance and metal route rather than with the Friday bulky items.
City cost & eligibility
$25 per machine set out for the monthly appliance and metal collection, paid in advance as a city recycling sticker. Exercise equipment is listed by name among the items that need a recycling sticker, bought at the Public Works office at 60 Commercial Way by 10 a.m. on the Thursday before the collection. The city invites residents to call 401-435-7701, option 7, about any other miscellaneous metal item.
When & how
Buy the sticker before the Thursday deadline and put the machine at the curb no more than twenty-four hours before the monthly collection day.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart so it can be lifted, keep the pieces together as one item, and keep it out of the rubbish cart, the recycling cart and the Friday bulky pile.
The city runs a Friday bulky collection for the whole city, but it is appointment-only and limited to one item per household each week.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for the Friday bulky collection. Its priced routes are the mattress schedule and the appliance and metal recycling sticker, so a bulky appointment inside the one-item-per-household limit carries no published charge while an unscheduled pile can draw a daily fine.
When & how
Call 401-435-7701 to book by noon on Thursday, then leave the item at the curb after 3 p.m. that day for the Friday collection. The city's carts and containers are collected on the regular rubbish day with material at the curb by 6 a.m. and nothing out before 3 p.m. the day before.
Get it ready
One bulky item per household per week, and rugs or carpeting count as one item when they are cut to four-foot lengths, rolled and tied. Anything outside the city cart is not collected on the normal rubbish route and can draw a daily fine, so bulky material waits for its appointment.
Curb by 6 a.m., never before 3 p.m. the day before
Rubbish, recycling and yard debris go at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day and may not be out before 3 p.m. the day before. Everything goes inside the city cart, and anything left outside the cart is not collected and can draw a daily fine. Carts sit with the wheels and handle toward the curb and about three feet from yard waste barrels and recycling carts.
Book the Thursday deadline, then set out for Friday
The Friday bulky collection runs for the whole city by appointment, one item per household per week. Schedule it on 401-435-7701 before noon on Thursday and put the item at the curb after 3 p.m. that afternoon. A bulky item set out without an appointment, or rubbish piled at the curb, can lead to a daily fine.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
City of East Providence Refuse and Recycling Division with Rhode Island Resource Recovery
Book the Friday bulky collection
An East Providence household with a piece of furniture or another large item that will not fit in the city cart and is not on the mattress or appliance route.
Cost & conditions
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for the Friday bulky collection, which is limited to one item per household per week. Its priced routes are the mattress schedule and the recycling sticker for appliances and metal items.
Arrange it
Call 401-435-7701, option 2, before noon on Thursday, then put the item at the curb after 3 p.m. that day.
One item per household each week, appointment only, and construction, demolition and remodelling material is never accepted. An unscheduled item at the curb can draw a daily fine, so the appointment comes first.
The self-haul routes for an East Providence address are the city yard and the state campus. At 60 Commercial Way the Department of Public Works takes e-waste, scrap metal, propane tanks, auto batteries, antifreeze, used motor oil, cooking oil, rigid plastic and used books Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the city publishes no rate for those drop-offs. The Resource Recovery campus in Johnston is where a mattress that is not torn or damaged goes free year-round, and its residential recycling area and small vehicle transfer station handle special and bulky drop-offs, while household hazardous waste is a free appointment-only Eco-Depot service. The campus brings material in Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to noon, and the operator publishes a separate accepted-materials and pricing list, so confirm the gate price before a load of anything other than bedding leaves the house. Construction and demolition debris has no municipal route at all and goes to the Johnston landfill or a private collector. State resource recovery campus for mattresses, bulky drop-off and trash
Rhode Island Resource Recovery campus
3 Shun Pike, Johnston, RI 02919
The residential recycling area and small vehicle transfer station at this entrance take special and bulky item drop-offs and are the route the city points residents to for a mattress that is not torn or damaged. The same campus carries the mattress recycling building at 34 Shun Pike, the central landfill and the materials recycling facility at the 65 Shun Pike entrance, and the Eco-Depot household hazardous waste programme by appointment.
The campus is open to Rhode Island residents and the entrances serve different purposes, so a load has to go to the right gate. Household hazardous waste is appointment-only through the Eco-Depot, the city is not permitted to collect or store that material, and the operator publishes a separate accepted-materials and pricing list that governs everything other than the mattress drop-off.
Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to noon for bringing material in, with office hours Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., both closed on the operator's published holidays.
The city states that a mattress which is not torn or damaged can be dropped at the Resource Recovery campus at no fee year-round, and the Eco-Depot is described as a free service for household hazardous waste from Rhode Island residents. The corporation publishes its own accepted-materials pricing for everything else as a separate fee schedule, so confirm the gate price for any other load.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?+

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?+
No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.
Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?+
Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.
Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?+
Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. The Department of Public Works complex at 60 Commercial Way takes e-waste Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the accepted list covers televisions, monitors, computers, printers, cartridges, wire and cable, VHS and DVD players and anything with a plug. Nothing in the city's pages prices that drop-off.Official guidance
What do I do with construction debris in East Providence?+
The city is not responsible for it. Construction debris is also outside the Friday bulky collection.Official guidance
Will the city take a treadmill?+
Yes, but through the sticker route rather than the Friday bulky collection, because exercise equipment is named on the city's list of items that need a recycling sticker. The office at the Public Works complex at 60 Commercial Way is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Official guidance
What can I drop off at 60 Commercial Way?+
The Department of Public Works yard on Commercial Way takes e-waste including televisions and computers, scrap metal, propane tanks, auto batteries, antifreeze, used motor oil and filters, cooking oil, rigid plastic such as old barrels and lawn furniture, used books, and paint through the state PaintCare programme. The window is Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.Official guidance
Where do hazardous waste and leftover paint go?+
Household hazardous waste is a state programme rather than a city one, because East Providence is not permitted to collect or store it under state regulations. Residents book a Resource Recovery Eco-Depot appointment, which is free for Rhode Island households and takes anything labelled toxic, poison, flammable or combustible. Leftover paint goes to a PaintCare drop-off, with the programme funded by a state fee on each paint container sold, and only hardened paint goes in the trash.Official guidance
