Yard waste, brush and mulch

Accepted with preparation

Leaves, mulch, pine straw, grass clippings and similar yard and tree trimmings are collected, bagged or loose in the city roll cart.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Yard waste from occupied city property is collected as part of the sanitation service, and oversized piles qualify for special on-call collection on request. Commercial landscapers, tree firms and contractors may not use the service.
When & how
Collected on your designated yard waste day, and never on a city holiday. Very large piles can be placed on the cherry picker or grapple loader list by calling (843) 665-3236.
Get it ready
Bag leaves, mulch, pine straw and grass, put everything in the right-of-way by 7:30 a.m., and cut limbs into sections four feet long and no more than four inches in diameter. Keep piles three to five feet from poles, fences, meter covers, sprinkler heads and parked cars.

Curb by 7:30 a.m. on your yard waste day

Place yard waste in the city right-of-way by 7:30 a.m. Bag leaves, mulch, pine straw and grass, and cut larger limbs into sections four feet long and no more than four inches in diameter. Keep the pile three to five feet away from poles, fences, meter covers, sprinkler heads and parked cars.

Never mix other waste into a yard waste pile

Yard waste must stay separate from household garbage, brown goods such as furniture and mattresses, white goods such as refrigerators and washers, tires, building materials, construction debris, recyclables and scrap metal. Mixing it in means the pile is not collected as yard waste.

Ask for special on-call yard waste collection

For very large tree limbs that cannot be cut down to the four-foot, four-inch rule or that will not fit the weekly route.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The city provides special on-call collection for oversized yard waste on request and does not publish a fee for the service; it applies to yard waste only.
Arrange it
Call the Public Works Department on (843) 665-3236 and ask to be placed on the cherry picker or grapple loader list, then set the material in the right-of-way the evening before the assigned day.

Only yard waste qualifies. Furniture, appliances, tires, construction material and scrap metal never enter this route, and the city has warned that yard waste routes are running behind schedule.

Pick up free mulch from the city facility

For residents who want the ground yard waste back, rather than a route for disposal.

Cost & conditions

Arrange it
Go to the Public Works and Utilities lot at 1440 S. McCurdy Road, Florence, SC 29506, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and call (843) 665-3236 or visit the admin office for loading.

Weekday hours only, and the mulch comes from inbound city yard waste, so it is not a drop-off point for your material.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Florence routes almost everything that is not garbage, recycling or yard waste to Florence County. Fifteen county drop-off sites run Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., taking aluminum, large appliances, cardboard, mixed paper, plastics 1 and 2, scrap metal, steel cans, used motor oil and tires at most locations, with electronics limited to four sites and tires refused at three. The city also runs a SCDHEC-permitted mulching facility at 1440 S. McCurdy Road where residents can collect free mulch on weekdays, and city fire stations take residential used motor oil with a five-gallon limit per trip.
