The local disposal guide
Columbia collects residential garbage weekly and recycling every other week through its own Public Works Sanitation Division, bills the service on the monthly utility bill, and runs bulky item and brush collection on the same day as the trash route but every other week. A bulk pickup has to be called in by early afternoon the business day before, the household gets three of them free each year, and anything beyond that or oversized is charged per pickup plus landfill tipping fees. The city refuses tires, electronics, glass and anything holding refrigerant, so those go to Maury County Solid Waste, where the transfer station on Lawson White Drive takes scrap metal at no charge and tires from a published starting price, and the nine resident convenience centres take empty refrigerators and air conditioners, televisions, batteries and paint at no charge.

All trash has to be bagged inside the can and nothing is collected outside it, recycling is never bagged, and misuse of a recycling cart means the cart is confiscated. Containers come off the street once they are empty under the city ordinance.
