Tires

Special rules apply

Tires are not named on the city's bulk list or in the Recycling Convenience Center's accepted materials, so they are not a city curbside or drop-off item. The Rockingham County / Harrisonburg Landfill takes waste tires and publishes a charge for each tire and for whole loads of them.

City cost & eligibility
From $3 per small tire off the rim at the Rockingham County / Harrisonburg Landfill, with a large tire off the rim at 4 dollars, a tire on the rim at 6 dollars, and 260 dollars per ton for tires larger than 18 inches or for 15 or more tires of any size on the rim, as published in the fee listing dated July 1, 2026. City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County loads at the landfill's published tire charges. Virginia limits how waste tires may be stored and processed, so a household with a large stack has to move them to an allowed destination rather than keep them on the property.
When & how
The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Virginia's tire guidance is to ask the local public works office whether the city or county solid waste center accepts waste tires, and neither of the city's own lists includes them.
Get it ready
Take the tires off the rim where you can, because the landfill charges more for a tire that is still mounted, and count the load first, because the rate changes once a load reaches 15 tires or a tire is larger than 18 inches.

Right item.

A bulk pickup starts with a reservation

Bulk and yard debris are collected on the regular trash day, but only after the address books that day through ReCollect. The reservation closes at 12 pm on the business day before the pickup, and one reserved day covers up to five bulk items and ten yard-debris units. An item that was not part of the reservation is not collected, so book the category and the count before anything moves to the curb.

Haul it to the Rockingham County / Harrisonburg Landfill

A household with a renovation load, tires, white goods or another load that the city's bulk list and drop-off center do not take.

Arrange it
Take the load to 813 Greendale Rd during open hours and stop at the scale to be weighed.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

The two self-haul routes in Harrisonburg sit on opposite sides of the city. The Recycling Convenience Center at 2055 Beery Road is the closer one for household items: it takes furniture, mattresses, box springs, televisions, computers and other electronics, appliances with the Freon removed, scrap metal, yard debris, bagged grass clippings and sorted recycling, and it is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to noon except on city holidays. It does not take construction debris, automotive parts, prescription medication or household hazardous waste. The Rockingham County / Harrisonburg Landfill at 813 Greendale Rd is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM, accepts construction and wood debris, yard debris, white goods and Freon appliances, and charges by weight with a separate per-tire charge for tires. It refuses chemicals, cleaners, fuels, railroad ties, cooking oil, fertilizers, medical waste and lead acid batteries, and will not take latex paint unless it is completely dried out. Household hazardous waste has its own collection days instead, and the next published drop-off on the city page is Saturday, October 10, 2026 from 8:00 AM to noon at the landfill.
