Get it ready
Yard waste has to be in a City-approved biodegradable bag, from Biobag, Bag to Nature or Ecoguard, at no more than forty pounds per bag, and it goes in a separate pile from the garbage because a different truck collects it and the state does not allow yard waste in landfills. Accepted material is branches pencil sized or smaller, garden plants, grass clippings, leaves, pine cones and needles, tree seeds, shrub trimmings and weeds. Cemetery wreaths, cornstalks, decorations, floral arrangements, food waste, pumpkins, rhubarb stems, tree nuts and wood chips are not collected, and plastic bags are not accepted for yard waste. Brush is tree and shrub trimmings under six inches in diameter, bundled in three foot lengths with string or twine only, at no more than forty pounds per bundle, with roots, stumps and dirt removed and no bags or boxes used.
Carts out the evening before and back in the next morning
Garbage goes in the brown automated cart in plastic bags with the lid closed and recycling goes loose in the blue cart, and neither belongs outside the cart, because anything set out beside a cart is not collected outside the weeks the department publicises. Carts and recyclables go to the curb no earlier than 6:30 p.m. the evening before the collection day and no later than 6 a.m. on the day, clear of trees, telephone poles and other obstacles and reachable from the street, and empty or tagged carts come back in by 8 a.m. the day after collection. A cart with garbage and recycling mixed together is not collected, recycling runs every other week on the same day as the garbage on route A or route B, and a household that believes it was missed should wait until after 1 p.m. on the collection day before calling 262-653-4050.
