Flattened empty cardboard boxes tied into a bundle

One less thing to work around

Unpacked. Settled in. Still surrounded by boxes?

The new furniture is in place. The deliveries are opened. Choose the cardboard you have and get the space back, without turning a stack of boxes into a guessing game.

A loose box, a ten-box bundle and a compacted bale have separate prices.

Choose with confidence

Boxes, bundles and bales are three different things.

A bundle is ten flattened boxes. A bale is mechanically compacted cardboard, securely strapped together and staged at an accessible loading dock.

Loose empty boxes.

Count each empty box as one item. Remove contents, plastic packing and foam. This choice is for the cardboard box itself.

Bundles of 10.

Flatten ten empty boxes and tie them into one bundle. Twenty-three boxes? Choose two ten-box bundles and three loose boxes. Count each box once.

Compacted bales.

Choose small for 50–150 lb, medium for 151–300 lb or large for 301–500 lb. Every bale must be securely bound and accessible from a loading dock. Unknown weight, no dock or over 500 lb? Ask our team first.

A little prep. A simpler pickup.

Choose your items now, then get them ready for your selected pickup day.

A tied stack of flattened boxes is a bundle, not a bale. Do not choose a bale based only on how large it looks.

Text us about your setup
  1. Empty and separate.

Remove the contents and packing material. Set aside filled household boxes and add them as separate items if they are also going.

  2. Count boxes or confirm bale weight.

Tie each ten-box bundle together. For compacted bales, use the actual weight to choose the correct option.

  3. Prepare the right access.

Loose boxes and bundles need an accessible outdoor spot. Bales need a loading dock; keep them securely bound and tell us about dock access before pickup.

Weekly refuse collection with recyclables on the same day

Accepted with preparation

The city collects refuse on a weekly scheduled day, and recyclables go out on that same trash pickup day. The Public Works and Refuse Department runs the service rather than a contractor.

City cost & eligibility
No residential collection rate is published on the retained city pages, so confirm the current refuse charge with the city on 304-348-6831 for recycling questions or through the Public Works office at City Hall on 304.348.8000.
When & how
Weekly on the neighborhood's scheduled trash pickup day, with the recycling collected on the same day rather than a separate route.
Get it ready
Put recyclables out in sealed or closed containers that are clearly marked as holding recyclables, weigh less than 40 pounds when full and hold 48 gallons or less, and keep them separate from regular garbage and food. The city is transitioning to its own Toter bins and continues to collect clearly marked containers during the change.

Cardboard and mixed paper

Accepted with preparation

Cardboard is on the city's curbside recycling list, both corrugated and non-corrugated boxes, along with mixed paper such as office paper, newspaper, cereal boxes and junk mail.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Cardboard and mixed paper are on the city's curbside recycling list with no published fee, and the route is the same weekly collection that already serves the address.
When & how
On the weekly trash pickup day with the rest of the recycling, in a container that is clearly marked, under 40 pounds full and 48 gallons or less.
Get it ready
Keep cardboard and paper dry, which the city names as a requirement, and keep them separate from regular garbage and food even though the recyclables may be co-mingled with each other. Flatten boxes so they fit the container.

Recyclables ride the weekly trash day

Recyclables go out on the weekly scheduled trash pickup day in a sealed or closed container that is clearly marked, under 40 pounds full and 48 gallons or less. They may be co-mingled with each other but not with regular garbage or food, and paper and cardboard have to stay dry.

City of Charleston Public Works and Refuse Department, with the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority

Use the Kanawha County recycling directory

A household with scrap metal, additional recyclables or material the city route does not take.

Cost & conditions
The county directory prints a street address and a phone number for each location it lists, from the authority's own Charleston facility on Slack Street to West Virginia Cashin Recyclables in Nitro, the metals business and the retail drop-offs, but it publishes no fees, so confirm the location, the material and any charge with the authority before a trip.
Arrange it
Search the county directory for the material and the nearest location, then call the authority to confirm the drop-off before loading.

The authority states that recycling options change constantly and that residents should confirm before travelling, and the directory mixes free drop-offs with retail counters.

Kanawha County recycling locations

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in Charleston runs through the city first and the county second. The city Refuse Department picks up furniture, appliances, televisions and tires, and the same weekly trash day carries the recycling, with cardboard, mixed paper, aluminium and steel cans and plastics numbered one and two accepted while glass and the higher numbered plastics are refused. Leaves are bagged for the trash day or raked to the street edge for the supplemental loose leaf collection that starts in early November. For anything outside those routes, the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority keeps a directory of drop-off locations, naming its own Charleston facility and West Virginia Cashin Recyclables in Nitro for common recyclables and a metals business for metal, and the authority warns that the options change often, so a call before loading is the practical step. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Cardboard pickup, from choosing your item to pickup day in Charleston.

How much does cardboard pickup cost?

One empty box is $59 first and $5 additional. A bundle of 10 flattened boxes is $79 first and $20 additional. Small, medium and large compacted bales have separate weight-based choices shown above.

What are the cardboard bale weight limits?

Small is 50–150 lb, medium is 151–300 lb and large is 301–500 lb. Each bale must stay securely bound and be ready at an accessible loading dock. Contact our team about unknown weights, larger bales or a location without dock access.

Can the boxes still have things inside?

Empty-cardboard pricing covers the cardboard itself. Use Filled household box for boxed household contents. Remove plastic, foam and other packing materials from empty boxes before collection.

Can I put cardboard in my regular recycling instead?

Check your local provider’s cardboard rules, including flattening, container limits and collection days. EPA recommends keeping paper products clean and dry. Dropcurb provides a separately booked pickup; a specific recycling facility or recycling outcome is not guaranteed by this booking.

Can I arrange same-day pickup?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Checkout shows the available dates for your address. Your booking is for a pickup day, rather than an exact arrival window. We send updates and photos after collection.

Where should I put my items?

Use an accessible outdoor spot you are allowed to use, and follow the instructions in your confirmation. Keep sidewalks, entrances and vehicle access clear. You arrange any indoor carrying. For a loading dock or a short building access window, confirm the setup with our team before booking.

What container can I use for Charleston recycling?

Yes. Cardboard, both corrugated and non-corrugated boxes, is on the city's curbside recycling list along with mixed paper such as office paper, newspaper, cereal boxes and junk mail. It goes out on the weekly trash pickup day in a marked container, and paper and cardboard have to be kept dry and out of the garbage and food waste.Official guidance

What will the City of Charleston pick up?

The city's own bulk answer names furniture, appliances, televisions and tires for the Refuse Department, and the weekly refuse route carries bagged household garbage with recyclables on the same day. Leaves go out bagged on the trash day or raked to the street edge for the supplemental collection, and anything else, scrap metal above all, goes through the Kanawha County recycling directory.Official guidance

What can I put in Charleston recycling?

Aluminium beverage cans, cardboard whether corrugated or not, mixed paper including office paper, newspaper, cereal boxes and junk mail, plastics numbered one and two, and steel food and soup cans without labels.
