Can I put a chair in the recycle bin?

Do not assume a whole chair belongs in a curbside recycling bin. Your local program determines the route by material and size. In New York City, mostly-metal or rigid-plastic chairs follow bulky recycling rules, while wood or upholstered furniture uses trash-only bulk collection. In Kane County, Illinois, metal folding chairs are accepted at the Fabyan Parkway scrap-metal dropoff, not in curbside carts. Check your local instructions before putting the chair out, and do not cut it to force it into the cart.

Choose the route by chair type

If the chair is usable, consider offering it for donation. If it is metal, check whether your local program names a scrap-metal or bulky-recycling route. Wood, upholstered and mixed-material chairs may follow a different bulky or trash route. Do not assume one rule covers every chair or every region.

When arranging pickup, identify the item accurately. Dropcurb’s catalog separates an office chair, including a wheeled desk chair, from an individual dining chair.

Prepare the chair for collection

Follow the local program’s instructions for the route you choose. If those routes are unsuitable, you can arrange pickup before moving the chair outside, but the accepted item must be outside and accessible before collection. If you need someone to carry it out from indoors, choose a service that includes indoor carrying.

Where Dropcurb fits

For an accepted office chair or dining chair that is already outside and accessible, Dropcurb handles loading, transport and disposal. Standard pickup does not include indoor carry-out, so arrange an accessible outdoor staging location before pickup; if you cannot move the chair outside, use a service that includes that labor. Check the current item price and available pickup dates when you book.
