Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress and a box spring are named as bulky items for the appointment and as free items for the drop-off at both county facilities. Because the drop-off price depends on the whole load, a mattress is free there only when everything in the vehicle is also a free item.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free within the one bulky waste pickup appointment every 12 months, and free to drop off at the North Area Recovery Station or Kiefer Landfill on a non-business load that contains only no-fee items. A second appointment inside the 12 months, material above five cubic yards, or a mixed load at the gate is charged.
When & how
Book the appointment at 916-875-5555, or take the unit to the station on Roseville Road or the landfill on Kiefer Boulevard during their open hours.
Get it ready
Keep the load to free items only if you are driving it to a facility, because one bag of household trash turns the whole load into a charged one, and keep the unit out of the garbage cart, which never takes bedding.

Carts go out by 6 a.m. with the handle facing the house

Carts are collected on the regular day including holidays, and they go to the curb by 6 a.m. with the handle facing the residence and the lid closed. Leave three feet between carts, six feet from cars, mailboxes and basketball hoops, and 14.5 feet of overhead clearance from limbs, wires and awnings, keep items out of and off the top of the cart, and bring the carts back onto the property within 24 hours of service under county code 6.20.400.C.

The bulky pile has its own placement rules

A bulky waste pile goes out by 6 a.m. and no more than 24 hours before the appointment, in front of the property line on the same side of the street, one foot from the curb or pavement edge on a flat hard surface. Keep it clear of sidewalks, traffic and gutters, six feet from fences, mailboxes, cars and hoops, and out from under utility lines and tree limbs. Appliances, electronics, tires and fluorescent tubes are placed to one side of the pile, and only the scheduled items are collected.

What never goes in a county cart

The garbage cart refuses organics, recyclables, liquids, e-waste, heavy items such as rocks, dirt, bricks and sod, hot ashes, coals and fireworks, hazardous waste and an animal over 15 pounds. Treated wood, glass panes and mirrors, concrete and tree stumps are refused with the bulky pickup too. Electronics, appliances, mattresses and metal go to the free residential drop-off at the station or the landfill, and paint, chemicals, oil, batteries and propane go to the hazardous waste facility.

Drop free items at the station or the landfill

A household with a mattress, a box spring, up to two appliances, electronics, small corded items, small power tools, clean metal or up to four passenger tires.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free at the North Area Recovery Station and Kiefer Landfill when every item in the load is on the free list, which includes one or two large appliances a day, mattresses and box springs on non-business loads, residents-only e-waste, clean metal, small corded items, small power tools, up to four passenger tires and, at Kiefer only, clean concrete, asphalt, tile, brick, rocks and stucco without rebar.
Arrange it
Take the load to 4450 Roseville Road in North Highlands or 12701 Kiefer Boulevard in Sloughhouse during open hours, stop at the scale house, and unload where staff direct after covering or securing the load.

A load that contains any charged item, such as household trash or furniture, is priced as a household load, fluids and removable batteries have to be pulled first, and a product with a built-in battery has to go to the e-waste drop-off rather than into a mixed load.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in Antelope means driving to the county facilities. The North Area Recovery Station at 4450 Roseville Road in North Highlands takes household loads and the free drop-off list, and Kiefer Landfill at 12701 Kiefer Boulevard in Sloughhouse does the same while also taking clean concrete, asphalt, tile, brick, rocks and stucco without rebar at no charge and being the only county site that accepts treated wood. A load made up only of no-fee items is free at either gate, which covers a mattress and a box spring, one or two large appliances a day, residents-only e-waste such as a television or a computer, clean metal, small corded items, small power tools and up to four passenger tires, while a load with furniture or household trash in it is weighed and charged. Fluids, removable batteries and anything with a built-in battery have to be handled separately, green waste and clean wood have their own area, and every load has to be covered or secured. Household chemicals go to the hazardous waste facility at the Roseville Road address, which keeps Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday hours and takes up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds a month free. A household hazardous waste facility operates on site.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Mattress removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Antelope.

How much does mattress removal cost in Antelope?

The price depends on the mattress size you choose. A queen mattress is $99 as the first item and $30 as an additional item. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Add any box spring or frame separately, then review your total and any applicable tax before payment.

Can I book same-day mattress pickup in Antelope?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Have the mattress outside and accessible according to your confirmation. Your booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Is my box spring or bed frame included in mattress removal?

The mattress price covers the mattress only. Add your box spring, bed frame or adjustable base separately if those are going too. Choose the size and type that match each item. The combined price appears before booking.

Will you carry my mattress downstairs or out of my apartment?

Dropcurb starts outside. You arrange to move the mattress out of your apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load it and take it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Check your building’s access rules before arranging the move outside.

Can you pick up my old mattress when my new one arrives?

You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed. Dropcurb books a pickup day, not the retailer’s delivery window. Contact us before booking if access is limited to a short time.

How do I get rid of a mattress in Antelope?

Two county routes take a mattress at no charge: the bulky waste appointment that comes with the residential service once every 12 months, and the free residential drop-off at the North Area Recovery Station or Kiefer Landfill. At the drop-off the mattress has to travel in a load that contains only free items, because a mixed load is charged.Official guidance

Who runs the collection in Antelope?

Sacramento County's Department of Waste Management and Recycling runs the residential carts, the bulky waste appointments and the two drop-off facilities for residents in the unincorporated areas of the county. Multifamily apartment complexes, condos, mobile home parks and multiplexes are served by commercial franchised haulers instead, so a household in one of those buildings should ask the property manager. Customer service is 916-875-5555, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Official guidance

What can I drop off for free at the county facilities?

When the load contains only free items, both the North Area Recovery Station and Kiefer Landfill take small corded items, small power tools, one or two large appliances a day, residents-only e-waste such as televisions, computers, phones and printers, mattresses and box springs on non-business loads, clean metal and up to four passenger tires a day. Kiefer also takes clean concrete, asphalt, tile, brick, rocks and stucco without rebar and no larger than 36 inches at no charge, and it is the only site that takes treated wood.Official guidance

Can I change a bulky waste appointment after I book it?

Yes, but the county asks you to call customer service at 916-875-5555 and speak to a representative at least one day before the appointment. Adding a special set-out item such as an appliance, e-waste, a tire or a fluorescent tube, and any change or cancellation, has to be done by phone, because emails and voicemails are not accepted.Official guidance
