Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are accepted on the free curbside bulky collection, where the programme names microwaves, televisions, monitors and computers, and the city also lists three local drop-offs, including a Best Buy that takes nearly all electronics and large appliances at no charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronics are accepted as items on the two free curbside bulky collections each Gilroy household gets per calendar year, Best Buy at 7011 Camino Arroyo takes nearly all electronics and large appliances at no charge, and the Santa Clara County household hazardous waste programme is free to city residents by appointment.
When & how
Book the curbside collection at 408.842.3358, take the device to one of the listed drop-offs, or book a county hazardous waste appointment at 408-299-7300. The local drop-offs are Martin Recycling at 6310 Automall Parkway, Best Buy at 7011 Camino Arroyo and Metech International at 6200 Engel Way, and the city recommends calling each one about hours and restrictions before travelling.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before handover, keep the screen whole, and keep electronics out of the garbage and the organics cart because California law makes most consumer electronics, batteries and mercury-containing products illegal to throw away. Alkaline household batteries are the exception that can be bagged and set on top of or beside the recycle bin at the curb, while every other battery goes to the county hazardous waste programme.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Each free bulky collection is bags or items, never a mix

Book the collection at 408.842.3358 and choose one option. Option one is up to twelve 32-gallon bags of garbage, all bagged, boxed or bundled with nothing loose, which is about two cubic yards or a pile three feet by six feet by three feet. Option two is two items such as appliances, furniture or electronic waste, with a mattress and box spring set counting as one item, and each item has to be under six feet long, under 200 pounds and manageable by one person.

Gilroy bulky items page: two free curbside collections a year, the two collection options, the item limits, the refusal list and the scheduling and forfeiture rules

Curbside by 6 a.m. and cancel a day ahead or lose the pickup

Bulky items have to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled collection day, and a household that is not out before the truck arrives forfeits that free collection. A cancellation has to reach customer service at least one business day before the appointment, unused collections do not roll over into the next calendar year, the account must be current rather than past due, and the programme covers residential customers inside the city of Gilroy, with multi-family properties arranging collections through the owner or manager.

Alkaline batteries ride the recycling cart, everything else does not

Alkaline household batteries can be sealed in a zip-top bag and left on top of or beside the recycling cart at the curb. Every other battery, along with fluorescent tubes, mercury thermostats and thermometers, and the electronics that California law bars from the trash, goes to the Santa Clara County household hazardous waste programme instead, which is appointment-only and free for city residents at 408-299-7300.

The county hazardous waste programme has its own limits

Appointments are required for every household hazardous waste drop-off, and the county programme will not accept hazardous waste in containers larger than five gallons, nor radioactive waste, ammunition or explosives. The city's own pages are the place to start for what is hazardous in the first place: paint, pesticides, cleaners, fuels, batteries, bulbs and electronics are all in that category.

Local electronics drop-offs, including a no-charge retailer

A household with a television, monitor, computer or other electronic device that would rather drop it off than wait for a collection day.

Cost & conditions

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Gilroy's self-haul outlet is the San Martin Transfer Station at 14070 Llagas Avenue, open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday. Recyclables are free for Recology customers who show proof of billing and five dollars per cubic yard for everyone else, covering aluminium and tin cans, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, mixed paper and cartons, with foamed polystyrene and packaging foam excluded from recycling. Appliances, furniture, brush and yard waste, construction and demolition debris, household garbage and untreated unpainted wood are accepted for a fee, with yard debris barred from plastic bags and from mixed loads, and construction material barred from carrying dirt, rock, concrete or brick. The station refuses household hazardous waste, which goes instead to the Santa Clara County programme that Gilroy residents can book free by appointment at 408-299-7300, and it refuses treated wood, which only authorised California landfills may take. Most Gilroy households never need the transfer station at all: two free curbside bulky item collections a year cover two large items or twelve bags of bundled material each time, and alkaline batteries can simply be bagged on top of the recycling cart. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Gilroy.

How much does TV removal cost in Gilroy?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Gilroy?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Otherwise the city lists Martin Recycling at 6310 Automall Parkway, Best Buy at 7011 Camino Arroyo, which takes nearly all electronics and large appliances at no charge, and Metech International at 6200 Engel Way, and the county household hazardous waste programme takes electronics free by appointment at 408-299-7300.Official guidance
