Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Electronic waste is collected free by laying it on top of the recycling cart, or beside the cart when it is too large, and it also counts within the bulky allowance.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronic waste is collected at no additional cost on the recycling cart, including covered electronic devices such as cathode ray tube televisions and monitors, LCD monitors, laptops, LCD and plasma televisions. Larger items can instead use the free bulky allowance, and the weekend household hazardous waste site takes electronics free as well.
When & how
Set electronic waste on top of the recycling cart, or beside it when it is too large to place safely on top, on the regular collection day. Batteries go in a plastic bag on top of the recycling cart on the same day.
Get it ready
Keep electronics and batteries out of the brown trash cart, keep paint, pesticides and light bulbs out of the recycling route, and wipe personal data from a computer or drive before it leaves the property.

Call before the bulky pile goes out

A bulky pickup is scheduled with Republic Services at (888) 742-5234 at least one calendar day ahead, excluding Saturday, Sunday and holidays, and items reach the curb only after that. Ordinance No. 2255 makes willfully depositing bulky waste on a street, sidewalk or public right-of-way a misdemeanor, and the flyer describes a red tag for a first unpermitted disposal and a green tag with a charge for a second.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Hawthorne residents have two self haul routes worth knowing. Electronic waste and household batteries ride free on top of the recycling cart on the regular collection day, with batteries bagged. Hazardous material, including paint, pesticides and light bulbs, is refused there and goes instead to the Hyperion Treatment Plant at 7660 W. Imperial Highway, Gate B, in Playa del Rey, which takes household hazardous and electronic waste free of charge on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle. The City also points to year round options: unused paint through PaintCare, used motor oil through the CalRecycle locator, household batteries through the state battery program and participating libraries, sharps and pharmaceuticals through the stewardship mail back kits, and electronics through Goodwill Southern California, with (888) CLEAN-LA or CleanLA.com for anything else. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Hawthorne.

How much does TV removal cost in Hawthorne?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Hawthorne?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

How does Hawthorne collect electronic waste?

At no additional cost, lay the electronic waste on top of the recycling cart, or set it next to the cart when it is too large to place there safely. Batteries go in a plastic bag on top of the same cart, and paint, pesticides and light bulbs are not accepted on this route.Official guidance

Can electronics go out as a bulky item instead?

Yes. The bulky program includes electronic waste, and the city code names electronic equipment including stereos, computers and video cassette recorders as bulky waste. Schedule the pickup a calendar day ahead and keep it within the free annual allowance.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Hawthorne?

Republic Services collects under a franchise agreement with the City. The hauler's customer service line is (888) 742-5234, and the City Public Works Department can be reached at (310) 349-2980.Official guidance

How do holidays affect collection?

Trash service is delayed one day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving Day, and after Christmas Day and New Year's Day when those fall on a weekday.Official guidance

Where do paint, oil, batteries and sharps go?

Paint goes through PaintCare, used motor oil through the CalRecycle collection center locator, household batteries through the state battery disposal program and participating libraries, and sharps and pharmaceuticals through the stewardship program, which includes mail back kits. Batteries can also go in a plastic bag on top of the recycling cart at no cost, and the hauler provides sharps containers, shipping boxes, labels and prepaid disposal within a week of a request.Official guidance

Why are workers inspecting carts?

To keep the City in compliance with SB 1383, Republic Services reviews customer participation and contamination each year, with advisors in yellow safety vests checking cart and dumpster contents. Residents do not have to do anything differently beyond sorting correctly.Official guidance
