Proof of residency and a prepaid ticket come before the load
The transfer station at 866 River Road asks for proof of residency, which can be a valid Connecticut driver's licence, a current Shelton tax bill with a matching photo ID or a current utility bill with a matching photo ID. No waste generated outside Shelton is accepted, every vehicle is unloaded by hand, and scavenging is not allowed. The dump ticket is bought in advance at the Shelton Public Works and Highway Department, 41 Myrtle Street, open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and it is paid for by cash or check, with the price set by the vehicle and the size of the load.
The accepted list covers air conditioners, appliances with refrigerator and freezer doors removed, auto and lead acid batteries, Christmas trees without lights or ornaments, flattened cardboard, dehumidifiers, electronics, furniture, gas grills, dried latex paint which may also go in the trash cart, lawn mowers, dry mattresses, metal and small appliances, play sets, propane gas tanks, tires off the rim up to four per residence a year, toys, brush and branches no longer than four feet and no more than 20 inches in diameter, and yard furniture, with free mulch for a resident who loads their own vehicle. Asphalt roofing material is not accepted, and hazardous waste items are saved for the collection day.
Shelton collects only in the approved carts: the brown cart for trash, collected weekly, and the blue cart for single stream recycling, collected every other week, with the cart set out the night before, the arrow facing the street and the handle toward the house. Trash has to be in plastic bags and no plastic bags may go in the recycling cart, and an overloaded cart may not be collected at all. Paint, solvents, gasoline, soil, acids, oil, hot ashes, medical waste, exposed needles, sand and rocks are barred from the carts, with one exception the city prints: latex paint is non hazardous and may go in the trash cart once it is completely dried.
