Check the cabinet before contacting a receiver
Remove records and personal items, empty the drawers and shelves, and check that the cabinet is complete and usable. Note whether it is vertical or lateral, whether it locks, whether a key is included, and its exact width. Then confirm that the receiver accepts that specific type and size. Ask about pickup during the request because availability can depend on the organization and region.
If moving requires separating drawers, use the filing-cabinet drawer-removal checklist.
If considering Goodwill, check its regional filing-cabinet restrictions first.
