Marblehead collects household trash and recycling in town carts and, from July 1, 2026, every eligible property joins that curbside program unless the owner files a written opt-out with the Board of Health. Nothing bulky rides the carts. The board's regulation states that furniture, mattresses, appliances and other oversized items must be taken to the transfer station on Woodfin Terrace and paid for there, and the posted fee notice charges weigh and pay loads such as furniture, rugs, padding, attic and cellar clean-outs, wood and construction material by the ton, with flat fees for appliances, screens, tires, porcelain fixtures and bedding. Yard waste has two routes: leaves and grass go out in bags on the published curbside weeks, and the transfer station yard waste area takes the rest for residents holding a valid calendar-year facility sticker, who also get free compost and access to the volunteer Swap Shed.

The transfer station at 5 Woodfin Terrace is open Monday through Saturday with the front gate open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. and again from 1 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., and the scale office closes at 11:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. It is closed on the listed holidays, including the day before New Year's, the day after Thanksgiving and the day before Christmas.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from every refrigerator and freezer before the trip, and keep roofing shingles, dirt, bricks, rocks and cement out of the load because solid fill and shingles are refused. Wood has to be cut to lengths no greater than four feet, and mattress or box spring fees are lower for a resident showing the facility sticker than for a commercial or unstickered load.
