Massachusetts banned mattresses and box springs from disposal on November 1, 2022, and Peabody stopped collecting them curbside. They are recycled instead: each mattress and each box spring needs its own sticker and is dropped off at the Peabody Recycling Center.
City cost & eligibility
$20 for for each item dropped off at the Peabody Recycling Center, with a mattress and a box spring each counted as a separate item. Peabody residents dropping off at 50 Farm Avenue, with proof of residency and a sticker bought at the Department of Public Services office, the City Clerk's office, any city library or the city payment center, where an online purchase is mailed out.
When & how
Drop off during Recycling Center hours, Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or on the same Saturdays as a Resident Dump Day from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. There is no curbside mattress collection and no appointment window at the curb.
Get it ready
Buy a sticker per item before the trip and keep the unit dry and whole, because a torn mattress is harder to handle on a trailer. Ask the retailer delivering a new mattress whether it takes the old one away, and if a private hauler is used instead, the household carries that cost.
A white goods sticker goes on the unit, not on a bag
The sticker is valid for one item and has to sit on the unit in a place the handler can see from the street. Call Republic Services at (781) 289-0500 by 3:00 p.m. at least one day before the regular rubbish day to be put on the pickup list, then have the item curbside by 7:00 a.m., or take it to 50 Farm Avenue with identification on a weekday between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
A dump day needs a voucher picked up before the Thursday deadline
Vouchers are monthly, expire on the residents' day for that month, are issued first come first served up to 100 per time slot, and carry no cost. The last day to pick one up or reserve one by phone is 2:30 p.m. on the Thursday before the event, no vouchers are issued on the Friday before, and proof of residency is required at the gate, where residents unload their own material into a dumpster.
A holiday pushes collection back one day for the rest of the week
When a 2026 holiday falls on a collection day, trash and recycling are delayed by one day for the remainder of that week, and the city buildings close. The 2026 list includes New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Patriots Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, while Saturday July 4 is listed with no delay.
