A bundle is ten flattened boxes. A bale is mechanically compacted cardboard, securely strapped together and staged at an accessible loading dock.
Loose empty boxes.
Count each empty box as one item. Remove contents, plastic packing and foam. This choice is for the cardboard box itself.
Bundles of 10.
Flatten ten empty boxes and tie them into one bundle. Twenty-three boxes? Choose two ten-box bundles and three loose boxes. Count each box once.
Compacted bales.
Choose small for 50–150 lb, medium for 151–300 lb or large for 301–500 lb. Every bale must be securely bound and accessible from a loading dock. Unknown weight, no dock or over 500 lb? Ask our team first.

When & how
Flatten the cardboard, cut every piece to 2 feet by 2 feet or smaller, and place it inside the recycling cart for the weekly collection, with the cart at the kerb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
All recyclables have to be inside the recycling cart because anything set beside it is not collected, pizza boxes go in the cart, and the cart has to be compatible with the truck's automatic arm, with wheels and handle facing away from the street and the cart three feet from other objects. Bagged trash, textiles and tanglers, non-recyclable plastics, scrap metal and kitchen items are the contaminants the town names most often.
Shrewsbury households pay for rubbish by the bag. Official blue pay-as-you-throw bags are sold at listed local retailers, priced as of July 13, 2026 at 1.44 for a small bag or 7.20 per roll of five and 2.92 for a large bag or 14.60 per roll of five. Bags should sit inside a lidded bin to keep animals out, must be able to close with nothing sticking out, may weigh no more than 20 pounds, and go to the kerb by 7:00 A.M. on the scheduled collection day. Items banned from landfill disposal by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection cannot go in the bag at all.
Single-stream recycling has run since July 1, 2024 and is collected weekly with the rubbish: mixed paper and cardboard in one stream and commingled glass, plastic and metal containers in the other.
