Construction, demolition and remodeling debris of any kind is excluded from the city's solid waste program, and so are auto hulks, engine blocks, transmission blocks, heavy machinery, snowmobiles, motorcycles, riding lawn mowers and tractors. Neither the weekly bulky allowance nor the Convenience Center covers a renovation load, and the same exclusion catches a heavy bagged load that is not in an official city bag.

The city program and the Convenience Center list no rate for construction, demolition or remodeling debris because the regulations exclude it. A private container or hauling company quotes its own price, which has to be confirmed before a load is ordered.

Get it ready
Keep renovation debris, heavy machinery and any bagged load outside the official city bags out of the curb set out, because uncollected material can be fined and the regulations let the city charge its own removal cost.
Household trash goes out in official City of Taunton pay-as-you-throw bags, closed or tied and not over 50 pounds, and closed bags may sit inside a plastic or metal barrel of no more than 35 gallons with the loaded barrel also staying under 50 pounds. Barrels need handles or handholds and a top diameter no smaller than the rest of the barrel, and bags may not be tied to the barrel. The city does not sell the bags directly, so residents buy them from the approved retailers in the city, and waste that is not in an official bag is not collected.
One bulky item per week, and the carve-outs are strict
The city collects a single bulky item per week from each residential unit that has a pay-as-you-throw set out, and the item leaves on the normal trash day. A mattress, a box spring, white goods, bulk metal, a television, a computer monitor, a sofa bed and a recliner are all outside that allowance and need one of the other routes, so a pile built from the wrong categories will not be taken.
Recycling runs every other week on the same day as trash
The city is split into an A week and a B week and each half sets recycling out every other week on its normal trash day, which the city publishes in a collection schedule listing the addresses. Recycling is single stream, so paper, cardboard and commingled containers can share the cart, but the material goes in loose and clean rather than in plastic bags, and a cart holding mixed waste and recyclables is not collected. One cart comes free with the service and extra carts are available from the Department of Public Works at 90 Ingell Street.
