No charge. Mattresses and box springs are accepted in the city bulk program with no separate published charge. A bulk item placed outside the allowed set out window can draw a 100.00 dollar solid waste fine.
When & how
Set the mattress and box spring at the curb after 5 p.m. the day before the normal trash pickup day and out by 7 a.m. on that day.
Get it ready
Keep the set at least 2 feet from the trash and recycling carts, keep it out of the garbage cart, and keep it dry until collection.
Bulk items may go to the curb any time after 5 p.m. the day before the normal trash pickup day as long as they are out by 7 a.m., an item placed outside that window is subject to a solid waste fine, and a bulk item has to sit at least 2 feet from the trash and recycling carts.
The county takes what the city refuses, and charges by the load
The Union County Landfill at 2125 Austin Chaney Road in Wingate accepts mattresses, furniture and other bulky items, construction and demolition waste, yard waste, white goods, tires off the rim, scrap metal, e-waste and household recycling, with recyclable material free, garbage, construction and demolition debris and yard waste charged by the load, and an unsecured load charged twice the normal fee.

Put bulk items at the curb after 5 p.m. the day before the normal trash day and out by 7 a.m., and call Solid Waste at (704) 282-4565 to schedule an e-waste pickup or to ask about an item.
Construction, demolition and repair debris, pallets, land clearing material, automobile parts, tires, batteries, paint, bulk liquids and pool chemicals are refused, so those items go to a county site instead.

From $20 per load of garbage, construction and demolition debris or yard waste in a pickup truck, car, SUV or van or on a single-axle trailer or flatbed two feet high or lower at the Union County Landfill. Union County residents, with recyclable material free, the same single-axle load above two feet at 40.00 per load, a dual-axle trailer or flatbed or a box truck or covered trailer at 80.00 per load, and an unsecured load charged twice the normal fee.
Arrange it
Use the landfill at 2125 Austin Chaney Road in Wingate, open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, or one of the residential centers the county lists in Monroe at 4600 Goldmine Road, 3005 Love Mill Road, 3214 Parkwood School Road and 5109 Armfield Mill Road, open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Proof of county residency is required, the Trash Pass covers only a limited daily amount of bagged household garbage, large loads have to go to the landfill, and e-waste is accepted at every residential center except White Store.
Mattresses, furniture and other bulky items, bagged household garbage, construction and demolition waste, yard waste, used motor oil and antifreeze from residents with a 5 gallon limit, used oil filters, e-waste, white goods such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, tires off the rim, scrap metal, household recycling and cardboard.
