The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Rocky Mount collects household garbage once a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on the street, and the division that runs it is the city's own Environmental Services Division, which also collects yard waste, bulky items, appliances and recyclables inside the city limits. Carts, bulk and yard waste go out by 6:30 a.m., carts sit three feet apart with the lid opening toward the street and the handles toward the house, and trash belongs inside the cart only. Anything too large for a rollout cart is a bulky item: furniture, mattresses and box springs, windows and mirrors, lawn equipment with the fluids drained and up to two automobile tires, collected by appointment two business days ahead. Building material has no city route at all, and the county layer takes over from there: a Nash County convenience center accepts bulky items, electronics, tires off the rims and construction waste up to 200 pounds per load with a permit, and the county construction and demolition landfill at 3057 Duke Road in Nashville takes larger project loads from Nash County addresses.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no appliance collection fee, and the county landfill describes refrigerant removal for a qualifying appliance as a free service, so confirm the city charge at 252-467-4980 or 252-467-4981 and ask about the free county route when the appliance holds refrigerant.

Get it ready
Empty the appliance, remove the doors or lay a refrigerator face down, and set it at the curb separated from other bulky waste and away from automobiles, mailboxes, fences, wires and limbs. Never place an appliance in the rollout cart or the recycling cart, and take a unit that holds refrigerant to the county landfill when the city will not collect it.

Television, monitor and computer

Special rules apply

Televisions, monitors and computers are refused in the recycling cart and have no published curbside route, so they go to the free annual America Recycles Day event or to a Nash County convenience center with a permit.

City cost & eligibility
No curbside electronics pickup is published, the event date still shown on the city and county pages is the November 8, 2025 date, and the county convenience center permit price is not printed, so confirm the next event date or the permit cost before loading a screen.
When & how
The published event runs 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Golden East Crossing Mall JC Penney parking lot on 1100 North Wesleyan Blvd, and the county convenience centers take electronics during their attendant hours, which close every Tuesday.
Get it ready
Keep the screen out of the recycling cart and out of the rollout cart, wipe or remove the drive before recycling a computer, and take televisions, monitors, computers, printers, cameras, telephones and small kitchen appliances to the event or to a county center with the permit visible at the site.

When & how
When the city accepts the piece, a bulky pickup is scheduled two business days before the household collection day, which runs Tuesday through Friday depending on the street address.

A city bulky pickup takes a maximum of two automobile tires, and the county takes up to five per trip with the tires off the rims at a convenience center or at the landfill.

City cost & eligibility

When & how

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Rocky Mount does not collect construction material: building materials sit outside residential solid waste, and the bulky list refuses dirt, rocks, concrete, blocks, bricks and roofing shingles.

City cost & eligibility
There is no city construction route. Nash County takes construction and demolition waste at its landfill on Duke Road in Nashville for a per ton tipping fee on loads generated in Nash County, and a county convenience center takes a load of 200 pounds or less with lumber cut to six feet or less but refuses bricks, asphalt, concrete and shingles.
When & how
The county landfill takes loads Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with arrival before 4:15 p.m., and the convenience centers keep seasonal attendant hours with every Tuesday closed.
Get it ready
Keep lumber, bricks, roofing material, plumbing and electrical material, carpet and flooring, and sheetrock or plaster out of the city carts. For a convenience center load, cut lumber to six feet or less, keep the load at or under 200 pounds and leave out bricks, asphalt, concrete and shingles, and take a larger load to the landfill with the waste generated in Nash County.

Scheduled city bulky item and appliance pickup

Arrange it
Call Environmental Services two business days before the household collection day, describe the items and the address, set the load at the curb by 6:30 a.m., and keep appliances separate from the rest of the bulky pile.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The published event is described as a free way to dispose of these materials, with the published date of Nov. 8, 2025 at the Golden East Crossing Mall JC Penney parking lot on 1100 North Wesleyan Blvd and the date announced each year on the county solid waste page.
Arrange it
Watch for the annual date, then bring the material to the published lot between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and keep the container labels intact and the chemicals separate from any recycling load.

The date on the city and county pages is the November 8, 2025 date, so confirm the next one before loading. This is a one day drop-off rather than a standing site, and nothing hazardous goes in the city carts in the meantime.

City of Rocky Mount Environmental Services Division with Nash County Solid Waste

Nash County convenience center drop-off

A household with bulky items, electronics, tires or a small construction load that holds a Nash County Convenience Center Permit.

Cost & conditions
The county does not print the permit price. A household inside a municipality is not issued a permit with the tax bill but can buy one at the county landfill, where a three-year permit for a municipal household with weekly city collection is prorated by the year of the cycle, so confirm the current cost at 252-462-2064.
Arrange it
Apply for the permit, keep the hangtag visible at the site, and load with the limits in mind: bulky items such as couches and mattresses are accepted, construction waste is capped at 200 pounds per load with lumber cut to six feet, and tires are limited to five per trip with every tire off the rim.

No commercial contractor waste, no wet paint, stains, varnishes or other solvents, no appliance that contains refrigerant, no bricks, asphalt, concrete or shingles, no animal carcasses or waste, no auto parts, and every site is closed on Tuesday.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Rocky Mount runs its own routes, so the closest self haul option is the city curb: a bulky item scheduled two business days ahead at 252-467-4980 or 252-467-4981, an appliance on the household trash day, and up to two automobile tires inside a bulky pickup. Everything the city will not take moves one layer out to Nash County. A convenience center takes household garbage, recyclables, yard waste, bulky items such as couches and mattresses, electronics, batteries, motor oil, oil filters, cooking oil, wooden pallets and up to 200 pounds of construction waste with lumber cut to six feet, but the household has to hold a county permit, every site is closed on Tuesday, and bricks, asphalt, concrete, shingles, wet paint, solvents and refrigerant appliances are refused there. The county construction and demolition landfill on Duke Road in Nashville takes the larger loads from Nash County addresses, including stumps, concrete, brick, block, asphalt and roofing material, on a per ton tipping fee, and it takes refrigerant appliances at the scrap metal site with the refrigerant removal described as free. Household chemicals wait for the free America Recycles Day drop-off, whose published date on the city and county pages is Nov. 8, 2025 at the Golden East Crossing Mall. Confirm the charge at 252-467-4980 or 252-467-4981, and ask about buying an additional rollout cart when the household regularly overflows the one it has.Official guidance

Does the city collect from apartments and rental buildings?

The city will not collect bulky waste from commercial establishments or multifamily locations serviced by stationary containers, and appliance collection is limited to homeowners and residents who buy their own appliances. Recycling for multifamily buildings runs through the four city drop-off sites instead.Official guidance

What does the Nash County route add?

A convenience center takes bulky items, electronics, batteries, tires off the rims and construction waste up to 200 pounds per load with a permit that a city household has to buy at the landfill, and the construction and demolition landfill on Duke Road takes larger Nash County loads by the ton. Every convenience center is closed on Tuesday, and the landfill is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Official guidance

Can wood, electronics or building material go in the recycling cart?

No. The recycling cart takes plastic, glass and aluminum only, and the city states plainly that food, clothing, wood, electronics and building material do not belong in it. Recyclables go out on the same day as household trash, and extra recyclables go in a clear bag on top of the cart or to one of the four drop-off sites.Official guidance
