Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Trash that did not fit in the cart is not a bulky item and needs its own sticker.
Furniture is on the city bulky list, so a couch, a chair or a table is collected by appointment from a city trash customer rather than left at the curb. A piece that is still usable can be donated, and the county landfill takes what is too worn to reuse.
A mattress or box spring is collected by appointment on the city bulky route, and the city answers the question directly by naming furniture and a mattress among the items it will pick up from a household with curbside trash service. The county landfill is the route for an address the city does not serve.
Large appliances are white goods, which North Carolina bans from landfills, so they are recycled rather than buried. The city collects them by appointment as a bulky item from its own trash customers, and the county landfill accepts them at no charge in its appliance recycling area.
A refrigerator, freezer or air conditioning unit is a white good with an explicit local route: the county landfill takes it at no charge in the appliance area, and the city books it on the bulky appointment pickup for its own trash customers. The refrigerant is removed and recycled before the unit is scrapped.
Televisions, computers and printers leave two ways: the city picks them up by appointment from its own trash customers, and the county household hazardous waste and electronics site takes them free from any county resident.
The city does not collect building material at the curb. Dirt, rocks, bricks and concrete are on its refusal list and demolition material from a contractor's job is the contractor's responsibility, so a project load goes to the county landfill, which runs a construction and demolition recovery facility.
Exercise equipment is not named on the city bulky list, so the answer depends on what the machine is made of. The city asks residents to say whether a bulky item is wood, metal or plastic so the right truck is sent, and the county landfill takes what the city will not.
The handoff matters
Everything scheduled has to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and material may be set out after noon the day before. The bulky items, the metal items, the electronics and the yard waste go in separate piles on the right-of-way because three different trucks service them, so list every item when the appointment is booked and bend or remove nails from lumber before it goes out.
