When & how

Get it ready
Empty the drawers, take the cushions off, and keep the piece whole enough for two people to lift. The county asks residents to donate furniture that is still in good condition rather than send it to the landfill, and the city names the ReStore addresses for building material, furniture, housewares and toys.
Everything scheduled has to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and material may be set out after noon the day before. The bulky items, the metal items, the electronics and the yard waste go in separate piles on the right-of-way because three different trucks service them, so list every item when the appointment is booked and bend or remove nails from lumber before it goes out.

A city trash customer with a couch, mattress, appliance, television or other oversized household item that will not fit in the cart.
Cost & conditions
No charge. City of Wilmington trash customers with curbside service on a public street, booked in advance. The city describes the bulky pickup as carrying no additional charge and includes it in the monthly Solid Waste Services rate, while a household without city trash service is not eligible.
Arrange it
Call the Solid Waste Services office on 910.341.7875 or complete the online appointment form no later than 4:30 p.m. on the business day before the trash day, list every item, then set the piles out on the right-of-way on the collection day.
The pickup is by appointment only and covers normal household items, not a whole property cleanout. Trash that did not fit in the cart is not a bulky item, nothing too large or heavy for the crew is taken, demolition material from contracted work is the contractor's responsibility, and the piles have to be separated by type.

Self-haul a load to the county landfill
A household or small contractor with construction debris, a mixed load, a mattress or an appliance that is easier to drive over than to book for pickup.

From $5 per load at the New Hanover County Landfill, where the $5.00 minimum charge applies to a small load, disposal is then billed at $61.00 per ton, and a mattress or box spring adds a flat $10.00 each, while appliances, household recyclables, used oil, antifreeze and up to five tires a day from a resident arrive at no charge. Any customer delivering to the scale at 5210 Highway 421 North. An out-of-county load carries a flat charge on top of the tonnage, and a load that creates a nuisance condition pays a flat $150 plus the weight of the load.
Arrange it
Load the vehicle, drive to 5210 Highway 421 North on a weekday between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. or on Saturday morning, and stop at the scale so the load can be weighed and the material directed to the right area.
Asbestos is no longer accepted at this landfill, and large appliances are refused at the county household hazardous waste site but accepted here at no charge. Concrete, clean dirt, untreated lumber and pallets, shingles and yard waste have their own areas and rates, and the landfill closes on the listed holidays.

Arrange it
Load the usable items and deliver them to the ReStore on South Third Street or Market Street, and call the store first about a large load or a piece that needs two people to move.
Only material in good condition is wanted. A heavily soiled, damaged or broken piece goes to the county landfill and is billed by weight, and the city bulky pile is the route for anything the store will not take.
Arrange a private hauler if the city does not serve the address
A household on a private street, in a multifamily property or at an address the city does not collect, where the city bulky appointment pickup and the curbside routes are not available.

A private hauler sets its own price for a collection, and the city publishes no rate for a route it does not run. The county landfill scale rate is the fallback comparison for a self-haul, so ask the hauler what it charges and where the load goes before booking.

The city states it cannot collect yard waste or bulky items from an address without city trash service, and that most multifamily housing contracts with a private hauler because the city runs no dumpster service. All customers have to be unloaded and off site by closing time, out-of-county loads carry an extra charge and are screened, and a load creating a nuisance condition pays a flat $150 plus its weight.
