A bundle is ten flattened boxes. A bale is mechanically compacted cardboard, securely strapped together and staged at an accessible loading dock.
Loose empty boxes.
Count each empty box as one item. Remove contents, plastic packing and foam. This choice is for the cardboard box itself.
Bundles of 10.
Flatten ten empty boxes and tie them into one bundle. Twenty-three boxes? Choose two ten-box bundles and three loose boxes. Count each box once.
Compacted bales.
Choose small for 50–150 lb, medium for 151–300 lb or large for 301–500 lb. Every bale must be securely bound and accessible from a loading dock. Unknown weight, no dock or over 500 lb? Ask our team first.

No charge. Included in the city collection service. The 76 Monhagen Avenue drop-off centre takes mixed recyclables and mixed paper at no charge, and the county also accepts resident recycling free at its transfer stations, where cardboard has to be reduced to a set size.
When & how
Recycling goes out Thursday evening for the Friday pickup, with a Saturday pickup in the holiday weeks listed on the city schedule. The drop-off centre is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the county stations open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.
Get it ready
Break boxes down and keep cardboard and paper dry inside the blue cart, because only recyclables belong there and household garbage in the recycling cart is a code violation. The county scale asks for cardboard reduced to a smaller size and refuses cardboard that is wet, waxed or soiled.

Household bagged garbage, commingled recyclables such as bottles, cans, jugs and foil, mixed paper, tires, electronics, empty propane tanks, scrap metal, air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers, motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries.
The bulk and receiving area is closed for site improvements, so construction and demolition debris, yard waste and bulk waste such as a mattress, furniture or a dishwasher are not being taken here and have to go to Transfer Station 1. Tipping rates apply to the household bagged garbage.

From $3 each residential bag of household trash of up to 39 gallons or 39 pounds, with recycling, electronics, motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries accepted free. Charged at the county scale, with a lower senior rate for a householder aged 60 or over who shows proof of age.
