Will the city take it?
Queens uses NYC Sanitation’s residential collection rules. Your item’s material controls the collection day; cooling appliances and covered electronics need separate arrangements.
Non-cooling household appliances generally follow the bulk-item rules.

Remove refrigerator/freezer doors, hinges and locks. DSNY does not collect appliances with R600a or R32 refrigerant; contact the manufacturer for options.
For pieces too large for a bin or bag, set bulk items out between 6pm and midnight before the correct collection day. Keep them out of the street and clear of pedestrian traffic or neighboring frontage. DSNY will not collect from private property.
Place the prepared appliance at the curb, back facing the street, between 6pm and midnight before the appointment. Leave it there after treatment for collection on the next recycling day.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
NYC has no public dump for ordinary bulky waste. Special-waste sites in all five boroughs accept listed electronics and household special waste, not couches or mattresses. How much does pickup cost?+
Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Can I book a pickup for today?+
Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.
Do my items need to be outside when I book?+
You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.
Will NYC collect an old couch?+
Yes, residential couches can use DSNY bulk collection. Use your address’s trash-only collection day for a non-recyclable sofa. Separate a pull-out sofa’s metal frame for recycling. Ordinary bulk pickup follows the route schedule; it is not an appointment service.Official guidance
How should I bag a mattress or box spring for city collection?+
Seal each mattress and box spring in its own plastic bag before placing it out for DSNY. Use a bag that is not red or orange; the city does not provide one. Does NYC pick up every type of refrigerator?+
No. Eligible cooling appliances require a DSNY refrigerant-removal appointment, followed by collection on the next recycling day. Appliances containing R600a or R32 refrigerant are excluded, as are oversized units that cannot fit the collection truck. Where can NYC residents take an old TV?+
DSNY special-waste sites in all five boroughs accept covered household electronics from NYC residents. Bring proof of residency and check hours before travel. Buildings with at least 10 units can also enroll in ecycleNYC; regular curbside trash is not a TV disposal route.Official guidance
Does NYC charge for residential bulk collection?+
NYC offers eligible residential bulk-item collection at no charge. The item must qualify and follow the address’s collection and preparation rules. Commercial waste, contractor debris and covered electronics do not belong on the ordinary residential bulk route.Official guidance
Is there a public dump in NYC for bulky items?+
No. NYC311 says there are no public dumps in New York City, and special-waste drop-off sites do not accept bulky furniture. Use eligible city collection, an appropriate private service or a donation organization that has confirmed it accepts the item.Official guidance
