When & how
Take the tire to the Resource Recovery drop-off gate at 3 Shun Pike in Johnston, open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m., or use the statewide tire dealer the state directory lists.
Get it ready
Ask about the rim before you load, because the state schedule prices tires by type rather than by rim, and keep tires out of the curbside carts and the bulky pile, which do not accept them. Call the scalehouse on 401-228-3102 if the load is unusual.
Scrap metal belongs at the River Street facility with no sticker, and a small metal appliance that holds no refrigerant can go with it, while tires have no Woonsocket route at all and must go to the statewide options, the Resource Recovery drop-off in Johnston or a tire dealer. Pianos, organs, pool tables and oil tanks cut in half are refused by the city program altogether.

Tires are not part of the city sticker program or the River Street facility list, so the state route is the only published option besides a tire dealer, and the price depends on the tire type rather than on the vehicle.

Tires at the tire gate, mattresses and box springs for recycling, white goods with and without CFC coolant, and scrap metal, with the residential recycling area taking special and bulky item drop-offs.
Acceptance criteria and fees apply, the mattress program takes up to three units a day without charge and charges above that, a white good that still holds CFC coolant carries a per unit fee, and a load has to meet the materials acceptance criteria posted by the authority. Fees may apply to other material and the scalehouse decides what a load is.
