Scrap metal appliances go to the Fall Clean-up, which takes stoves, washers, dryers, barbecues, lawn mowers and hot water tanks with the gas and oil removed. A refrigerator or freezer is refused there and goes to a county or scrap metal site the city names.
City cost & eligibility
From $25 for for a refrigerator or freezer at the Skagit County Transfer Station as listed on the city's Fall Clean-up sheet, with Skagit River Steel charging 30 dollars for the same unit, while scrap metal appliances such as stoves, washers and dryers are taken free of charge at the Fall Clean-up. The free scrap metal route is limited to a qualifying residence inside the city limits and its one garbage load on the event day, and the refrigerator and freezer fees are set by the receiving businesses rather than by the city.

Scrap metal appliances go in on the Fall Clean-up day, Saturday October 10, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1010 Shop Lane. A refrigerator or freezer goes instead to the Skagit County Transfer Station on (360) 416-1570 or Skagit River Steel on 360-757-6096 during their own open hours.
Get it ready
Remove the gas and oil from an engine driven item before it goes in the scrap metal load, as the sheet requires, and keep refrigerant units out of the event entirely because they are refused at the gate. Call the receiving site first for a refrigerator or freezer, because both charge a fee and the amounts come from them.
The Fall Clean-up is one day with a bill and an ID
The free clean-up runs only on Saturday October 10, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the City Shop Complex, 1010 Shop Lane. Bring a physical copy of the September or October city utility bill and identification that verifies the city address, because no other utility bill is accepted. One average load each of garbage, recycling and yard waste is allowed, loads must be kept separate, all trash must be bagged, and staff may refuse anything that is not bagged or that is messy, wet or too large.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

On the Fall Clean-up day the same address also takes household garbage, junk and debris, furniture including couches, chairs, tables and mattresses, clean wood, recyclables, scrap metal, yard waste, up to five gallons of household paint and up to five pounds of alkaline batteries.
The yard waste facility serves residents inside the city limits who are signed up for city garbage service, requires a punch card bought in advance, is closed Mondays and Tuesdays year round, and refuses rocks, stumps, large pieces of sod, milled, treated or painted lumber, railroad ties, lawn furniture, engine parts, animal waste and garbage, with no commercial lawn care providers allowed. The clean-up day requires the September or October utility bill and identification, keeps the three loads separate, and refuses refrigerators, freezers, tires, propane tanks, televisions, computer parts, motor oil and concrete.
Yard waste facility: Wednesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March to October, and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November to February, closed Mondays and Tuesdays year round and on federal holidays.
