Can you recycle wood furniture?

Sometimes, but wood furniture is not automatically accepted in recycling. In New York City, DSNY treats wood and composite furniture as trash-only bulk collection, while metal and plastic furniture follow different rules. For a reusable piece, check a local reuse organization first; if it is not accepted and you can place it outside accessibly, arrange pickup for an accepted item.

Check the material and the receiver’s rules

Ask the local specialist whether it accepts your specific piece: solid wood, composite or engineered material, upholstery, and painted or treated surfaces can affect the decision. Also confirm whether the item must be clean, working, complete, or free of certain features.

For example, Twin Cities Habitat ReStore lists specific accepted furniture such as dining tables, coffee tables, dressers, and complete beds, while excluding other items and requiring condition or pickup details for some pieces. Those rules apply locally, so do not assume another reuse organization follows them.

For the NYC example, compare the furniture garbage-day and recycling rules before choosing a collection stream.

Prepare the item for pickup

If reuse is not available, select the correct item type and move it outside before pickup. Dropcurb standard pickup requires accepted items to be outside and accessible; you can book before moving them, but they must be ready at pickup. Indoor carry-out is not available, so arrange a service that includes indoor labor if you cannot move the furniture yourself.

Where Dropcurb fits

For an accepted coffee table or small dresser that is already outside and accessible, Dropcurb handles loading, transport, and disposal. Standard pickup does not include carrying furniture out of a room or storage unit, so arrange that access yourself or use a service that includes indoor carrying.
